I've bought mine just a couple of days ago, around £50. It arrived in just a day, all new and shiny. The results are incredibly better than a bare flash, although it can be reflected of the ceiling.

This guy sells at least one every week, check it out: http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/flagheadphoto/

This is the original version, not the Chinese off-brand stuff.

Silly question, maybe? But the unit blocks the Af assist lamp on the flash. Does it matter?

I'm guessing you'll only be able to focus with the in camera system!

Yes, I'd assume so. But will the flash AF say there is something a couple of inches away, and the camera AF says it's actually 10" away, and then it gets all confused and has a meltdown. Will it just ignore what the flash says? Does camera AF always over-ride flash AF? I'd assume so, otherwise these things would not sell. Just wondering ...

BTW, I am interested in it. Will it be OK for macro stuff?

I tried it out last night. The 40D + 100mm macro AF was fine, no problems at all. Obviously you will need to MF in near total darkness. There is a Chinese rip off that allows assist light, but it is not exactly ring any more. You will also need to add about +1 1/3 exposure compensation.

Macro range was good. I did 1:1 at ISO 400, f/16, 1/250s with power to spare. The results were comparable with true macro ringlite.

It works great, just the camera feels so heavy with it, and you have to be very careful with it as it may break the flash foot of the hotshoe.

Which one did you get - the older SIRC one or the newer one (with RayFlash written on the front)? I've been offered the older SIRC one but I understand this loses a stop compared to the new ones but is a bit less flimsy. I am sure either is better than my home-made one...

SIRC one. It is far bigger (and cheaper) than the new ones which I is better. It also fits any camera, and works with fat lenses like 24-70L. The new one *might* struggle with that lens.

Flash doesn't focus the lens. It projects a red grid over the surface which simply aids the camera's AF module.

Ha! That was my next question. I guess I'll only be using it with the lens or a 50mil. Got to go and measure the holes and lenses once I get home. Given the pressure it puts on the hotshoe mount I kinda hope the fit on the lens will be snug to offer a bit of extra support.

Cheers

Ian
