How many flashes should I expect in the life of this flash?

I have some old rechargeable batteries, and I wanted to test and see how many flashes they could do just by doing constant flashes, but is this bad for the flash?

I'm not really sure of how I should expect it to last. Any advice?

Can't say that it's something I'd do, no matter what the life of the flash is, it still seems like an unnecassary caning of it!

For the price of Canon flashes it'll last you longer than you need to worry about.
The 'mah' rating of your rechargeables will play an important part as to how long they will last when fully charged.

The flash unit has a built in safety feature to prevent you over heating the lamp and re-charging circuitry.
If you fire 60 flashes from the battery (or 40 from an external power source) the the flash will go into safety mode and remain there for 15 minutes. During this period the flash will only operate once every 20 seconds.

I got a set of 600 mAh and a set of 2,000 mAh -- how long should each set last? How many fires?

The actual number of flash actuations would be very arbitry and depend to a large degree on the lens used. Changing the FL of a zoom will consume battery power without actually firing the flash.

Those seem very weak batteries, look into some 2600 or 2700mah batteries, they last me a while of flashes depending on the intensity of the setting.

Set of 4 Duracell rechargables is like £7 or something they are 2650 :) i have 4 sets in my bag which tbh is alot of flashes.

What charger do you use for them? A Duracell branded one or a third-party brand?

Energizer Fast charger takes about an hour i think to fully charge them which is good I'm sure it reduces the life of the batteries but in the disposable life we live in £7 really isn't much for a new set :).

In ETTL mode if the camera is set to manual mode than the strength of the flash will vary, just like you could vary the flash in the manual mode of the flash.

So the number of flashes can vary by a large amount depending on the strength of the flash required.

If you fire the flash rapidly at full power more than 10 or so times in a row without letting it rest and keep repeating that then you run the risk of knackering the flashgun
