Hi all
I'm having a thick moment  how do I stop the pre-flash on the 580EX II? Can't find a reference to it in the manual  .... :D

If you're using e-TTL, then the pre-flash is something you're stuck with. You can hit the FEL button first, though, to separate the pre-flash from the main flash.

Thanks for the reply  but I'm using it in manual :)

IIRC switch off the ETTL in the flash control menu on the camera, or switch the flash to manual mode

Thanks Webby
I thought I had the flash set in manual mode  maybe not  I'll try again!

A wild guess, but have you got the 580 configured as a "master"? If that's the case then the preflash is there to trigger any additional units that it expects to see.

Serious thanks Bob
That is most likely the problem  I never even considered that and I had been messing around to fire the MT24 ..... :bonk:

Bob

why does it allow you to configure it as master or slave when you cant use it as a slave?

can it? it can't fire from a master firing though can it? not without a trigger attached.

It can act as a slave "off camera" if there's another 580 on the hotshoe.
(see page 34 of your 580 user guide)
