580EX II and YN 560 help?

How have you got the 580EXII set. If in TTL, it will emit a flash before the shutter opens which will trigger the YN whilst the shutter is closed.

Not an expert here but could the preflash be triggering the slave....then 'x' millisecs later the shutter opens effectively too late? Does that make sense?

OK I don't know the terminologies here.

When the preflash fires, it has nothing to do with exposure therefore the shutter is still closed as far as I understand.

If you are on S1 mode the preflash will still fire on the 580, triggering the 560 whilst the shutter is still closed and then the shutter will open without any flash exposure - thinking out loud!!

I think I understand that.

Ive just tried the following

580 set in manual as master flash turned off
560 set in S1 mode

Result = flash seems to fire but I think its preflashing as it does not show on exposure.

580 set in manual as master flash turned off
560 set in S2 mode

Result = Flash doesn't even fire

I think I would expect those results.

In the second setup, the s2 mode is then awaiting for the proper flash exposure before it fires? So if you turn on the 580 flash, but turn the power right down that should work???

What's your shutter speed at? It could be a sync speed issue. Keep it above 1/200th second.
Are you able to get it working fully if you have the 580 flashing as normal?
I'm not familiar with the master/slave setups of the 580EX but if I recall correctly, the 580EX can send an IR signal to the slave flashes to fire. Is the YN560 compatible with that or does it only respond to flash (in this case the pre-flash)? S1 on my youngnuo flash just responds to another flash going off. And from above, S2 ignores the pre flash, Is there another setting to recieve the IR signal?

Andy I've just tried a shiutter speed of 200 & 250 and still the 560 wont fire correctly. i'm looking into the flash and it is firing but not at the right time for it to show in the pics.

im nearly blind now lol! ive also done a test shooting into the tv and i can only see the glare from the 580 mounted on my cam.

wahoo finally sussed it.

if you set the 580EX as master it fails to sync. So by just using the 580 in normal mode the flash actually fires the YN560 and not the infrared thingy :cuckoo:

ps cheers for the help :)

Yes, when set as master the 580 always fires a pre-flash to instruct E-TTL slaves (which your YN isn't, it's only basic optical slave) even in manual. There's manual E-TTL and manual-manual :D

You must set the gun to M manual, and normal mode (not master or slave) to disable the pre-flash.

Hope that's clear LOL.
