I was taking shots at a fight gig recently. I use a 40D, tamron 17-50 and 580ex with battery pack

they came out pretty well I think but I was mucking around with the camera and I noticed that the AF assist light from the 580ex was coming on in auto mode but not in manual mode (which I was using most of the time and then auto for in the ring group shots as I didn't have enough time to pick my settings so had to trust the camera)

I've looked through all the custom and flash settings I can find but I couldn't find a solution. I've also searched the forum with no luck yet.
any :help: appreciated
 
It only works with 28mm and longer lenses. I don't know if that is specific to Canon lenses or not. (I only have Canon gear so can't help there)
 
Just tried it on my 40D, only works on auto not manual.

I assumed that it was a setting that is enabled in automatic but not enabled by default in the manual mode...and something that I can fix.
but I've looked through all the settings...everything I've seen makes me think that it should fire!
very weird...will do some more reading

only works in one shot AF

it took me MONTHS to work this out (I even did a hard reset of my camera :bang:)

this is true for a 430exII and 450d and 50d cameras ;)

I was running on High speed 6.3fps and AI servo focusing so that would make sense

thanks for clearing that up! in less than MONTHS! was going to trawl through the manual that I've dug out this morning. (lost it for a bit!)
