After considering the Pentax Kx which has had some good reviews and seems great value, I have not been able to find out much about the quality of the kit lenses that come in the deal at Currys. Not very helpful in my local store, the girl said that the camera guy wasnt in today and she realy didnt know much about anything I'm afraid except he was a 'Canon guy' so i walked out still undecided. However after much deliberation and the deluge of pludits I have decided to push the boat on the Canon 550D BUT...... I want a telephoto to go with the standard lens, however the 550D will really stretch my budget so I need some advice. I can go to around £300 tops on the lens so which is best a canon, sigma or tamron for the money? Thanks in advance for any advice? P.S. the tele will be used mainly at Motorsport and Airshow advents.

I think most people who are looking for a budget telephoto to go with this camera tend to get the Canon 55-250mm IS. It has had some great reviews and I think it is within your budget.

Thats the one i had my eye on and is in budget, anyone here used this combination?

Yup, I have, and I like the 55-250................. a lot! :)

Nice shot Mike can you remember at what focal length you shot it at?

probably was at the long end and i s was on this was taken the first week i had the lens

Sorry Tim not being a bird type I wouldnt know how close you can get, so I was merely trying to find out if this was indeed shot at its maxium range. Chris there are some fantastic images in that thread, great work.I cant believe how good this lens is compered to Canon's 75-300 disaster! Its off to Jessops in the morning for me then, a 550D and a 55-250 please! then off to Goodwood for the Revival at the end of the week.

My OH has the 55-250 and it is a great lens if 250mm is long enough for you.

On the other hand if you want something longer I am selling a Sigma 135-400mm in this forum for not too much more :)

I was wondering about the 250 being not long enough, but often with my Kodak 6.1 mp bridge set at max focal length (388mm) I could miss part of the moving subject. At least now with up to 18mp I should be able to crop the image a bit more and get a better shot?

Why thank you! They were taken by a real newbie too (me!).

I sold up before I had chance to get into photography properly. Now I'm looking to get going again. I'll definitely be on the lookout for another one of these lenses.

They sell for about £160 online. One sold on here
used the other day, for £100!

OK its cost me the good part of £900 but the combo of the 550d and the 55-250 looks like it may be the real deal! Just taken a few flash shots indoors tonight and all I can say so far is BRILLIANT! The clarity is superb even at 250 with flash, i cant wait for the Goodwood Revival at the weekend, lets see what this newbie DLSR owner can do at his first attempt of fast moving objects!

Thanks guys for all your input.

Have fun with it. I'm sure you will get lovely pics with that lens :)
