I have just got myself a YN565EX speedlite to use with my 550D. When attached to the camera it works perfrectly with the TTL system. The thing I am having problems with is getting it to fire when off camera. I know when it is off camera it wont work with TTL but it should still trigger from the built in camera flash. I set the light up so the sensor is in view of the camera, but when I half press the shutter and the built in TTL pre flashes go off it triggers the speedlight. I need the speedlight to trigger when I fully press the shutter and the main camera flash goes off. Any ideas how to get around this?

I think you'll need to purchase a wireless transmitter/receiver for the hotshoe :)

Yongnuo Rf602s are good value. No ETTL, just manual control with the Off Camera Flash

Using the built in flash, it seems to pulse while auto focusing - this triggers the yn656.
This happens even when the pop up flash is in manual mode.

A workaround is to set your lens to manual focus, as bizarre as that sounds.
Or get the triggers Lbm suggested

The built in flash pulsing is not an ettl preflash.

You just need to go to the Custom functions in the (auto focus /drive) group and disable af assist for the built in flash. When you do that it will work perfectly.

Brilliant solved my problem!

Well, I'm not sure if it did.
Maybe the OCF isn't firing anymore when you half-press the shutter button, but... Are you photos well exposed?

Because, if you don't put the flash in S2 Slave, it will fire when the built-in flash fires it's pre-flash.

You are welcome.

Using S2 the flashgun will only operate in manual mode.

If for some reason, you keep the built in flash in ettl mode you need to use S2

If you change the built in flash to manual you don’t need to use S2 because there won’t be an ettl preflash.

If you don’t disable the built in flash AF assist it will fire the slave when you try to focus. :)

I wasn't aware that the 550D had flash control and therefore presumed the external flash would be a manual slave anyway.

I also wasn't aware that the 550D's internal flash could be switched to manual mode.

I don't know about the 550D I haven't got one, if it doesn't have manual mode then S2 needs to be used. The AF assist need to be disabled first.
Is that posible on the 550D ?

As far as I know, the 550D doesn't have manual built-in flash, only TTL.
So, I reinforce Colin's first answer: "The flash needs to be in S2 slave mode so that it ignores the cameras pre-flash".

Ok after a quick google the 550D doesn't have manual flash.

So the definitive answer is a combination of the two.

If AF assist is on it needs to be off when using AF
The flash needs to be in S2 which will allow manual control only.

Jason, if you didn't have s2 set when you thought the problem was solved then your exposure would have only been using the on board flash, and although the 565 looks to be firing at the same time it would have actually been firing fractionally too early and not effecting the exposure.

I don't think it's a combination.

I believe the 565EX always works in manual mode when used wireless. So, you always have to put it in Manual, S2 Slave when firing it with the camera's built-in flash, because it is always TTL (and it fires a pre-flash in order to measure light, making the 565EX, if in S1 mode, to also fire). The resulting photos will be, I believe, underexposed.

ps: I guess this is a bit confusing answer, but... :\

ps2: what I meant to say is that even if you disable AF assist, the built-in flash will always fire a pre-flash, causing the 565EX to fire, not firing when the built-in flash actually fires to take the picture.

Hi I was meant to say it solved the problem i was having with my setup

I have a 40d, 480ex on rf transmitter/receiver, and a yn460.

I was using just the 40d and the yn460 and was having trouble with the onboard flash autofocus flash triggering the yn460. I didnt realise you could turn off the autofocus flash till now.

I use the yn460 when I want to go manual as its quick and easy.
