I am in the market for a canon 55-250mm.
There are two on amazon.
One which is the mark 2 I'm guessing. But it is slightly cheaper than the mk1.
Am I misunderstanding this.
Which should I be going for.
Sorry for being such a novice

IIRC the only difference between the MkI and MkII is cosmetic. I think the optics are the same, and maybe a tweak in the IS department is about it. Either way, it's a really good lens. Very sharp with good AF speed for a lens of this price. I bought a second hand one off the forum for £110 and it looked like a brand new lens. If you can get a reasonably priced one I'd jump straight in for it.

There are no tweaks at all to the mk2, it's exactly the same lens as the mk1. The only changes are the exterior cosmetics bringing it in line with the new efs lenses.

Dont pay more for a mk2.

So what is it on the cosmetics that you can tell the difference? I can't tell on Canons site with them both together. How do you know your not paying MkII for a MkI?

It'll say on the end of the lens (glass end) 55-250IS II

The Mk 2 should be / definitely is more expensive than the Mk1.

He is correct, just checked and Amazon are listing the mk II at £3 cheaper than the mk I

As above, it will say mk2. Also the plastics are different and the text font (ie on the 55-250 markings) are now the same as the newer efs lenses, the 15-85 and 18-135.

I just checked and the MkI is £159.80 and the MkII £131.56!

The MkI ad even provides a link to the newer model at the cheaper price.

This is correct. Just looked. Sorry for getting back on here late. In Florida so I'm five hours behind. So pinch and punch and all that.

Right so the lenses are identical internally.
Mk2 will just show 'IS II' on the front. And is all black on the outside. Whereas the mk1 had a silver ring around the base.

Thanks guys.
Will be ordering when I get back to uk
