55-250 started making noises

Hi all,

I've just been playing with my Canon 55-250mm lens and I've noticed that it's started making a whirring sound.

I've narrowed it down to the IS, as when I switch this off the lens is near enough silent.

I've had a look around, and I've seen a few people saying this is normal - but my worry is that it's never made this noise before. I've often sat around in the house when it's quiet taking pics, and I've never heard it once yet.

Does anyone know if this is an issue I should get checked out? I'm worried I damaged it - I took it out in the cold all day yesterday, plus it had a little knock (which was very minor - not something I'd normally worry about). Do you think I've damaged it?

Sorry to bug, but can anyone offer any advice on this at all?

I'm going to try call in at my local store this weekend to see what they say, but in the meantime I'm worried! :(
 
IS will make a whirring sound - it does sound normal.

If your house is anything like mine been quiet enough to hear IS is a rare luxury
 
all the IS on my lenses make a whirring noise, some louder than others...
 
It should make a whiring/clicking/ticking sound (descriptions vary!) mine does, but it shouldn't be very loud! I am barely concious of mine when in use, but don't forget it is almost next to your ear when taking pics.
Are you sure it isn't the auto-focus (AF) thats noisy! That, (within reason) is normal.

I'll check it out anyway, as I'm 100% certain that I've never heard it before - but it sounds like it's normal!

I feel like I need to post something rude now to match expectations but alas, I have nothing to offer I'm afraid :)
 
I was just using the lens on my 500d...it is noisy compared to the kit lens
