Thinking about purchasing one and would like to know if some of you have one and are they any good as they seem rather cheap, i know they're plastic but are the optics good for sharp images?

One of the best value for money lenses you can buy. Capable of very sharp images and you can pick one up for about £150.
 
Fantastic lens for the money. At £120 give it ago and if you don't like it sell it on for a similar price you paid for it.
 
Im quite pleased with mine. Although it becomes extremely soft after 200mm so i tend not to go past 200mm. Everything else is acceptable for the price

Mine was pin sharp all the way to 250mm!

Loved that lens.

And so is mine! Still love it!
Don't be put off by the price, shoots well above that. Go for the mk1, mk2 is overpriced at the mo, not much difference in quality, if any, seems to be mostly cosmetic changes!
 
Have only ever heard good remarks about the lens. A worthy buy
 
I think i would be looking at buying a 2nd hand one if it was me. I am always trying to save money!
 
If i was sure i was going to stay with Canon i would not hesitate to buy one.
 
Excellent lens and you have to pay quite a lot more to get any discernible improvement in IQ

Mine was fine up to 250mm as well, reckon you had a rogue sample there
 
Its just a site showing you samples, thats all. Im not saying these are soft, i was explaining my lens shoots soft at 250mm
 
Absolutely agree with the others here. I haven't found my 55-250 to be soft at any point in the range. Great lens for the money.

In terms of pricing -

Second hand when i looked they were going for arround £130 or so including postage.

Bran NEW you can get them easily for £150 including postage, so for a difference of £20 you can get a brand new one which seems like a no brainer to me... ( well it was when i bought mine! ) :canon:
