Good timing huh, 10,000th post, exactly 1 year to the date from when I joined these fine forums :D

What can I say.......actually, loads! :D

A year ago, when I joined, I was full of enthusiasm after spending a fortune in Jessops and getting a few lucky shots. I got great feedback, and it inspired me to hang around. I liked the place...Then I posted a REALLY STUPID QUESTION! And caused a bit of a hoo ha! :D I should have known the reaction it would have caused, but alas, being a noob and all ;)

Anyway, its been a year, and I seem to have settled in and made a hell of a lot of friends (and a few enemies), but more importantly, I have actually found a calling card I feel.

Photography has let me close a lot of bad doors (My 365 was therapy at its best), and as well as closing those doors, I have opened new ones. I no longer have dark moments with nothing to do. At the slightest hint of free time, I pick up my camera and go shoot. My SAD has been cured! The Winter is simply a new playground of funky light! Practise in the darkness, and take advantage of the late sunrise and early sunset! A year ago, I would be depressed out of my nut, wishing for brighter days! Now I just wish for good light and some free time, its awesome. I feel all my problems have been solved. I pick up the camera, and look through the viewfinder at a completely different world to the one I lived in last year (and every year before it). I see a world that excites me, a world that makes me want to record everything about it. A world I want to share with friends, family and loved ones. A world which drags me to far away mountains one week, and big cities the next - just so I can play with my wee black box and meet new friends. I love my new world, and I never want to leave.

Going forward, I am going to more and more, take advantage of this new world. I will spend even more time with my camera, more time learning how to take a decent photo, and I am going to obsess over every little thing until I perfect it. I am going to read more books, check more blogs, ask more questions, but more importantly, I am going to stretch my imagination to bursting point. I am going to stretch my need to know to bursting point. I am going to be the best I can be, and I just know, every last one of you, is going to help.

Thank you Marcel all others who created this place. Thank you for creating my home from home. And to every single member, thank you for doing something I thought would never happen. Thank you for accepting me as me, never in my life have I been able to just "be Gary" and not have it cause me problems. This place has been a god send.

One last thing, Want to know something funny? I have never called myself a photographer. I have called myself a "guy with cool cameras" or a "keen amatuer". I have never had the confidence to use the "photographer" word. Screw it.

My name is Gary, and I am a photographer.

Well said. It takes you a while before you really do realise that you're not just a guy with a camera. Takes a while before you feel comfortable calling yourself that because you've seen so many amazing photographer's work and theres no way you're in the same league. Then one day you accept it, you are a photographer. Welcome to the club :)

Nice one, you have come a long way thats for sure.

The next step?

Get rid of the borders!!!!;)

Keep shooting and the best tip I can give anyone is see the photo before you take it, then don't just take it, make it. Have a look at the sports section with regards to the ice hockey event I covered.....

well done.

Pete.

That you are mate.

A Photographer. Not only a bloody great one, an inspirational one!

Inspirational post Gary.
Whenever I've looked at your photos, I've thought you must have been doing this for years.

I've only had a "proper" camera for about 3 months. If my pics are half as good as yours in another 9 months I shall be happy.

Truly inspiring. Keep it up Gary.

Inspiring as always Gary. You're a fantastic photographer and you've come a long way in that respect as well as personally. Keep on the upward road Gary and keep inspiring us with your amazing eye for a photograph

Congrats on being here a year, 10,000 posts That must be a record as well, you and your posts are very inspiring, and it was a pleasure to meet you in Blackpool,

Congratulations on 10k and one year. I have enjoyed your photographs and advice on the time I have been on this forum. You've made a positive difference. I look forward to even more interesting contributions from you in future.

Stange and it takes a while but you will never look at the world like you used too, you are a photographer through and through Gary. Keep up the inspiration for us all. P.S. when you want to move to the next level........... Get a Canon :p  All the best .

Gary, it's a pleasure to have you around here. I don't get to spend as much time with my camera as I'd like and often I feel that my growth as a tog is stunted by lack of time to practice.

So it's doubly fab to see how far you have come in a year.

Now lets look forward to another!

Great post, Gary, and I think your contribution to TP is significant.

You remind me of a good friend of mine, who, when he decides to take on a new hobby or challenge, throws himself wholeheartedly into it, and the passion, zest and commitment to it and for it, come across so clearly in the results :)

Well done on 1yr +10,000 posts

Good man yer a credit to the forum:thumbs:

Gary well done mate, its been a pleasure to have met you and your family this year!

I look forward to more great images from you in 2009 and that CD will be with you for Michaela soon ;)

Well done Gary. Your photos are truly excellent.

Congratulations on your TP birthday and reaching 10,000 posts.

I did not join TP until June, so had no idea of the length of time you had been involved in Photography when reading your posts and looking at your pictures. To have just read your thread asking about operating the D200 I am amazed you have come so far in such a short period of time.

Keep up the interest and do not get too despondent when you feel that you are not making progress, photography is a funny thing, you occasionally seem to hit a wall as regards improvement or progress, then all of a sudden, BAM you jump up to the next level, you may then find the same thing happens again.

From some of your posts I find that you can be a bit impulsive, and your deleting of all you images might in retrospect be a mistake you later come to regret. I was in a similar position to you 30 years ago, and to this day still regret binning all those old negatives.

Well done!

Well done Gary, great post !
Love your photos looking forward to your next year of even more inspiring photos!

Richard

A shame you've spent that long with the dark side* ... great post mate

Gary,
Well done for your first year and the achivement you have made within it.

Well done Gary, a great post like many of your others and a damn good photographer.

Great to hear Gary and it was actually your photographs that brought me in to this place. I suffer from depression and photography is such a release and without I'm a lot worse off. I know there's a lot more out there who feel the same. It's so good to have fun. :)

Wel done Gary, Keep the posts coming and more insparational work

Well Ive always believed you were meant to find your niche in life. The potential has always been there you just needed somewhere to channel it and I am very happy for you.:) Gratz on 10k But a big gratz for the inspiration you are to all who know you and care about you:)

I can't believe the post I've just read of yours from a year ago, I thought you had been doing this stuff for years! That's one hell of a steep learning curve you've travelled, keep it going mate and keep inspiring us!

keep it up Gary, your an inspiration to many people on here.

I just want to know how you manage so many posts and to take photos? I have been here a few weeks longer than you and only have a 10th of the posts - must be my shy nature :D

You certainly brighten the place up here and help make it fun :)

I'm approaching 2,000 posts! Perhaps I should throw a party/pub crawl or organise a TP meet!

Lol, me too. I've just checked and I'm on 1,600 and it will be my first birthday next month.

Don't stop though Gary, we love each and every one.

You might just catch Matt Sayle at this rate ;)
