weekly 52 in 2013: Brian of Bozeat : COMPLETE

Hey Brian.

Really like Sin. The idea of the calculator was inventive, but I really thought the colours worked well in it too.

As to season... Well that's some bad weather you have there..! With no TV and living in Cheshire I have no idea what the weather is like anywhere else. I like the concept of the cars grouping together for warmth and it works for the theme very well.

A good start!

Ian.

Love the DOF for Sin. Season is bang on theme, makes you want to stick the fire on and forget about going out.

Hi Brian. Nice idea for sin. A little too much space around the button for me, but I like the use of a shallow depth of field to highlight it.
Your season shot is a little too straight on for my liking and the tracks in the background are a little distracting. Get outside and change the angle ;)

Hi Brian, I like the concept behind your season image, having the cars central in the frame adds to their isolation and the thought behind it.
I agree with Dean, the dark drain draws the viewers eye away a little so feel it is better cloned out.
The tyre tracks at the top give a little context to the image and frame the cars too so I think that is a good touch. Good work  Iain

really like the high key look.. super vivid colours and great composition... very minor niggles.. slightly patchy bottom R corner and just under the bottle top L

Nice image!

I really like the composition, the movement in the fluid, and the empty background really works for me. Maybe a little blown out in the fluid in places, but I'd imagine that's a really hard shot to execute?

Wow, that really pops. High key isn't something I've done much of, but this inspired me to look it up.

It has, to me, an almost uber realism to it.

Crit, the glass looks slightly pixelated.

Cheers.

A really nice graphic quality with strong colours. There is a fair bit of pixelation in the liquid though.

excellent high key look never tried it myself but that looks spot on plenty of detail liquid looks great

Absolutley awesome Brian.

I'm a b****r for liking things level, and your's could do with a tiny tad ACW.

Looks like you've only put enough "wine"(?) in the bottle to fill the one glass - would look super awesome if the bottle was full and it was just being poured almost recklessly.

This wasn't using the High Key setting on the D5100 was it?

Graham, I tried it with the bottle full, it just shot out too quickly and went everywhere - and it looked less interesting! Also I have only ever used my 5100 in manual mode. I haven't got around to exploring the rest of the dial yet. In fact I just realised that I don't even know if the video works or not. (this weeks side project; get to know your cameras auto functions Brian!)

I tried several times to get it straight, Like you I am careful with verticals/horizontals, in this case for some reason I couldn't get the glass vertical and horizontal at the same time, I plumped for vertical. I'd had enough of it by then!:shake:

Thanks for taking the time to comment everyone. To be honest I was a little bit disappointed with the end result. It was still a very interesting project to do and demonstrated (to me anyway) how inspirational the 52'52 is. I clearly pushed myself just beyond my limits and have learned a lesson from it. I take this as a net positive.

My thoughts:

My background to subject exposure ratio was just wrong - so it took me a fair bit of PP to extract detail in the glass/liquid/bottle while keeping the background "white". Also the liquid is a bit blown out in places for the same reason. The extra (over?) processing has created issues of its own, not present in the original. Actually, the background was not "white" all over, I could of painted in the area's that I didn't like but I left it that way so that I have to live* with it and so that I don't ever forget to do it right "in camera" in the future. (*I'm going to print all my 52's in a photobook at the end of the year)

I don't like the [reflection on/look of] the bottle. This is a hard one, the bottle is glass and moving and has liquid inside - I need to think this through.

Fabulous shot Brian. I like the angle and uneven flow with the contrast in colour and light BG.

Great image Brian, well done :D

Nice shot Brian, like the way you have approached it and done it a little different.

Self-assessment it a really good practise to adopt but always ask yourself if you're being too hard on yourself.

When this popped up on Flickr it really caught my eye. It's dramatic and punchy and the composition is very good. I've done similar things with my images in keeping imperfections as a reminder to "do it right" next time so I'm with you on that.

So whilst the whites may be a little blown in places, it doesn't detract from the fact that you've got the "artistic" ability to create great shots. The technical stuff can be learned and you can only improve.

Well done!

Ian.

This is my favorite "Gravity" shot so far.

I am really struggling with it myself, combo of fast shutter speed and lighting and backgrounds. I wont finish mine tonight I need some dayling as I dont have studio lights.

I will be all my 52's into my website gallery

Thank you both, I am moved (and motivated) by your comments.

Onward and upward - :D Bring on week 4!

Loving that Brian, really good composition, cracking colours and the white background works a treat - Nice One

Great image Brian, well done :D

Really like the lighting and colours! Great shot.

What can I say in response to all of this positivity? - thank you to you all for your support. I'm really looking forward to week 4 now!

I use 2 speedlights and an old projector screen as a BG.

check out this link strobist 101 for an extensive guide to cheap and effective lighting, I am still working my way through this, it's brilliant.

Hi brian

I most certainly wouldn't have been even a smidge disappointed with that shot ....not gonna crit as wouldn't have got near that finished result if I'd tried ....cracking image mister

Week 4 - Wild: It's a dunnock, a wild bird with a wild hedonistic sex life  (Honestly - who'd of thunk it?) : shot today at Stewartby nature reserve in the Marston vale. Probably my finest ever "bird in the wild" shot.

Sin....Nice simple shot, I think the sin is most young people today couldn't do the simplest math without one.

Season.... is this your version of the old Herbie film the love bug, 2 cars having a secret meeting. :naughty:

Gravity...This one has come off really well, it's similar to one I was trying but I wasn't happy with the colour of my liquid with a white background.

Wild....Really nice sharp shot and the patchy snow works too.

great bird shot.. nice details, sharp in all the right places.. like the snowy scene

Hi Brian,
I think you're being too hard on yourself with your crit on gravity. Yes there are minor details which could tidy it up, I feel it is spot on. It has a crisp, sharp look to it, the image certainly pops.
Wild is bang on theme too, technically very good. Crit? I think what would have really nailed it would be the bird "doing something" IYSWIM. But other than that  Iain

Haha it's always the quiet ones isn't it. Nice straightforward shot, good composition and the bird's dead sharp. I wonder if it would look better with a bit less foreground, maybe cropping just at the top of the oof sticks?

Cracking gravity shot, too.

nice sharp pic but the crop i feel is not what it could be

<Bows> You made my day, thank you.

Thanks, in my defence I have a few more of it pecking the ground and hopping about but I chose this one because I like its stance. Dunnocks don’t look up much!

Thanks, I ummed and arred with the crop, In the end I didn’t want to come in too tight, I chose this one because like that it’s in it’s environment. (Dunnocks live on the ground and in the bottom of hedges, hence the “hedge sparrow” common name.) So I will keep it as it is for my ’52 but I will revisit it in my portfolio in a couple of weeks to see if I like it better with a different crop then. Isn’t it funny how your mind can change when you haven’t looked at a picture for a few days?

Nice bird mate ;)

Good colours and composition.

Thanks fellas for your encouragement and help .

...make my Dunnock look like, well - a Dunnock!

Lovely shot Brian, looks like well a Dunnock  and a fine example of one too  . I like the composition in the snow, with the contrast of the grass. Nothing wrong with this shot, fine job. See you next week :)

Hi ya

Beautiful shot if a Dunnock...love the natural surround comlete with a smattering of snow , fab detail in it's feathers & eye

I too would crop it....just below the top of that really annoying twig...then clone the remains of the twig out...you won't lose too much & will still show the natural surrounds

Great capture Brian, well done.

Veeeeery nice Dunnock Brian - you've done really well to get it as sharp as you have at 300mm, and only 1/250 sec.

I'm (surprisingly) not going to suggest cloning out any twigs, it's in it's natural habitat - and there are leaves and twigs there - none of them are obscuring the bird, so I'm fine with it.

I might have taken a bit off top and bottom - but not vital.
