Yes
After a while in the motor trade and with a proper wage, I promised myself a Breitling watch, After seeing some of my customers with them I liked the look, on closer inspection I like them even more - But Now its close, I cant bring myself to buy one, seems crass to spend 5k on a watch, when my Casiso Gshock has been great since I bought it....it tells the time and I dont want much more to be honest....Its not like I have 5k sloshing about either, but thats not the point.....

So to my question, what did you promise yourself for your 40th, 50th 60th or higher and did you get it and did it match up to your expectations?

Just had a great long weekend in Germany for a joint 50th with ten good mates.

Liver is a bit tender today though.

Haha, you auld fud :)

To do my best to enjoy every day of life - not to sweat the petty things and not to pet the sweaty things. To try not to put off doing things only to regret not having done them when the opportunity presented itself.

Sorry for me it was just another day. No I am not an old misery, just really didn't feel any different.

We had no spare money on my 50th, so I think expectations of self-reward were minimal. I've had plenty of good things come my way over the years though, so don't feel hard done by.

Ditto.

I went to the George hotel in Inveraray for a weekend away with my wife.
And spent £80 on a bottle of whisky from the whisky shop.
Was a great birthday.
I do have a nice Tag watch, but I bought that 19 years ago.

Pretty much the same for me, might have a bit of a do when I hit 150 though.

For my 50th I bought myself an MX-5 & went on holiday to Cyprus.

Had the car for 3 years then sold it with about 4k miles on the clock. Waste of money, but it scratched an itch.

I guess a good `named` watch will increase/hold it's value though, so certainly a better investment than a car.

You're 50 already? For some reason (possibly your username) I thought you were a few months younger than me and I'm not 50 for almost four years.

Nope.
46 + 1 week.

What I meant was not feeling any different.

Now I do!

I don't think I even celebrated my 21st. Birthdays are for kids. If I want something and have the money, I'll buy it, doesn't have to be a birthday.

I'm a little bit closer to that number, I made most promises to myself for the age thirty. And missed one target by one year :(

I originally wanted a Breitling (25th) but when I tried it on it put me off. Didn't look good on me. I went for Rolex instead. The damn thing appreciated so much, really a lot in value that I was seriously underinsured when burgled. Further more after twice thwarting an attempt to thwart a theft on holiday. And twice here in the uk on the streets of London I was wearing it less and less. And actually didn't replace it.

My target for when I hit the big 50 is remain in good health, paid off my mortgage and get a mustard plant.

book yourself a holiday to turkey ,while there you can buy a breitling copy for between £12 to £50 depending on how much you wanna be ripped off for .but at least you'll have a good tan .or simply buy a breitling and a rolex fake and enjoy life .any money left from the 5k you can send on to me as a thank you .:banana::banana:

I can't stand fakes. I appreciate myself too much to be purchasing and wearing counterfeit goods. I can't stand that mentality as to me it is not about showing off and pretending what you've got, but appreciating what you've got purely for yourself.

Difficult to say, I say buy the Breitling, in the long term from 50 onwards it will remind you each time you look at it how well you have done for yourself :-)

Just don't take it on holiday though, take the casio

My 50th was a few years ago, and we weren't exactly flush with cash, but the OH said to have a look on fleabay and see if there was anything I fancied.
So, half an hour later, I had put in a bid on what looked to be a good condition Squier Stratocaster. I got it for £40, and it was only five miles away, so picked it up the same day.
It had hardly been used, not a mark on it, and was almost in tune. It certainly plays OK (not like a Fender obviously), and was really an ideal present at the time.

As noted earlier, I'm not 50 yet. I wanted to have savings equal to my outstanding mortgage balance by then, but I'm not on target to make it, mainly due to spending on improvements to my home.

40th birthday went to Iceland.
50th Birthday stayed overnight at The Vineyard in Newbury, when it was a 2 Michelin star restaurant

Thank You all who replied, some great responses there and a couple of giggles thrown in

Thanks.

I am not getting a watch - I have had a little try on of a couple of nice ones But they just look OTT and are heavy, and will bug me if worn for too long.....wish I hadn't tried them on.....
Back to the drawing board....

Been there experienced that. Don't try a Rolex as it might be a better fit and you'll end up spending even more money.

No fear, I'm not good enough to buy a Rolex.....

When I reached 40 I promised myself I would learn to ride a motorbike as I was fed up riding pillion. At 44 did a 5 day direct access course and put in for my test. First test in early November, terrible weather conditions, thunder and lightening, the most miserable examiner you could get. He failed to follow me off is a major roundabout in a busy city centre which I didn't know that well, hence I got lost, had no idea where he was, no contact from him via earpiece. I ended up having to ride back to the training centre, terrified of being stopped by police for being unaccompanied. Burst into tears when I eventually arrived at the training centre, the examiner had just left me there and went back to the test centre! His excuse was that he told me to leave the roundabout at the third exit and I exited at the fourth! So he buggered off and left me I failed :(
I immediately put in for my second test...same bloody examiner. This time all good, he complimented me on my skill and asked if this was my first test! Once he gave me my pass certificate I told him of our previous encounter and told him I couldn't believe he just left me there...no answer.

I bought myself a Suzuki SV650

On my 50th birthday I promised myself I would make it to my 60th. Its my 58th birthday today so only a couple more to go :)

Reads a bit depressing does that.

Presume reaching 60 isn't the end of the race? ;)

Happy Birthday btw.
Nah, when I reach 60 I will promise myself to reach 70 :)

I'll tell you when I get there. :p

Hahahahahahahahaha :p:D

OK, if I get there. :cautious:
