50mm for nikon D60

One of the best lenses for the price, however, it won't autofocus on the D60. Nikon make a model that will autofocus, but I'm not sure they've even started shipping them yet. The price is a big difference as well.

If you don't mind autofocusing, it's one of the best lenses out there IMO.

Nikon have now released the AF-S version, its more expensive but will autofocus

Actually it only the f/1.4 version that has been updated to AF-S and it's a tad more expensive (about £160 more) than the f/1.8 version in the link...

It won't AF, and it may not be the most interesting focal length for the photography that you do.

What sort of things do you like to shoot?

The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 will AF and may be a good alternative. It won't work (at least not properly) on a full frame Nikon film or digital camera, so if a full frame upgrade is in your future you might not want to buy that.

The Nikon 30mm f/2 might be a better focal length (check 50mm and 30mm on your kit lens to see which you prefer, tape each in place for a day) but it won't autofocus.

thankyou for your replies, i usually use manual focus anyway at the moment, i find that using the manual focus gave me more of a challenge.

Blapto I'm shooting alot of portrait shots at the moment, so if you could suggest a best fixed range, i do shoot alot at 50mm (or in that general area)

Surely Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and Nikon 35mm f/2?

If happy to manual focus on your D60, and for portrait work 50mm and above on a DX sensor would be fine. BTW the 50mm f/1.8 Nikon is a few £ cheaper at Warehouse Express with free delivery

Im looking for a 50mm myself at the moment. Thanks for sharing the link to it.

A lot of people are saying the build quality isnt the best. Can anyone comment?

Fantastic lens. Sharp as something sharp with sharpened edges, and the build quality ain't bad for £75.

Do you think this would help with some of my portrait shots that you commented on??

hello Chaz from cannock too eh? the 50mm is great but you have to consider the manual focusing

you will be able to get great separation from the background with the 1.8

hey, yes im from Great Wyrley, just next to cannock.
Right.... I'm new to this so may need some help, what is the difference between the 1.4 and the 1.8?
I think from what you just said the 1.8 is for me, but if you could explain that would be ace.
:)

its the f-stop or aperture the lens can go to the lower the number the more light is let into the lens the shallower the depth of filed the faster the shutter speed, for you i doubt you would need faster glass especially for portrait work so i would save the cash and get the f/1.8

umm, ok thanks. I think that the manual focus 1.8 will be the best bet, for £75 i'll just have to deal with the manual focus. haha
