Morning,

I am looking at purchasing a 50mm f1.4 for my Sony A550 which isn't a full frame body, i have read that this is a good lens for a full frame body.

What difference will this be on a cropped lens?

Thanks

I think your Sony is a 1.5X crop sensor? If that's the case the 50mm will become the effective equivalent of a 75mm focal length. The positives are that it will give you a pretty much ideal focal length for shallow DOF portraits and hand held low light shooting in pretty poor light.

The downside is that for more general shooting you lose a lot of the width of the field of view making it a bit restrictive in confined spaces.

For all that I use a 50mm on a crop sensor - the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for me.

I have a 50mm 1.4 on my 500d and I struggle to take photos in confined spaces. However as said above for portraits and low light it can't be beaten.

I have a Tamron 17-50 2.8f for moments when space is a issue.

I use my 50mm f1.4 on both my crop sensor 7d and full frame 5d mark II and I like it on both, yes it gives a different field of view but I seem to soon adjust:)

I love my 50mm on a crop body. Can be tight indoors but generally fine with it.

I've recently got the 50 f/1.4 for my A700, to replace the Minolta 50 f/1.7 that was the first lens I bought when I started with an A200 (+18-70 kit).

The f/1.4 obviously has a wider max aperture, and is generally thought of as better optically, but otherwise the 2 are similar.

It's a great lens for shallow DOF, and when combined with the Sony image stabilisation it has a lot of potential for shooting indoors without flash.
