50mm EF Dilemma

Hi,

I've used the Sigma 50mm ART lens and I reckon it's got better IQ than the Canon 50mm F1.2 (on a tripod for product stuff). However, aside from potential AF niggles (which seem to affect earlier ARTs), what about its weather-proofing, or lack of? For product work the ART will be superb, but what if I decide to sneak it out of the office for weekend jaunts? My feeling is that for product work the Sigma will be noticeably better, but I will always be nervous about taking it outside if there is humidity in the air.

The Canon AF speed isn't the fastest...(although I am sure more trustworthy than the Sigma - if I did weddings I'd get the Canon without a thought). Is there such a 50mm that is weatherproofed and has snappy AF? Tokina Opera anyone?

The product shots are for work (manual focus, obviously), whereas the outdoor stuff is for fun... Is there a 50mm that lets you have your cake and eat it?

Thanks in advance.

I have used that sigma for years, still have it, it’s fine and done worry about using it outdoors.

Humidity in the UK is not a problem, I’ve taken it to Italy, Japan, Portugal, America, it survived and works great. It really is quite tough.

Thank you!

I presume you have kept the Canon F1.2 as well? If you have a job where reliable AF is paramount, does the Sigma inspire confidence like your L lenses?

In an ideal world I'd get the Sigma for product stuff and the Canon for outdoor fun. The Canon's slightly lighter, and I trust its AF more (I have a Sigma for a Nikon crop setup and although the IQ punches above its weight for cost, it is prone to hunting - more so than cheap kit lenses).
