50mm Canon L vs Sigma Art?

Anyone tried both? I have the canon and like it a lot apart from finding it slow to focus. How does the sigma compare, especially for focus speed?
 
The Sigma 50/1.4A is a better lens in all the ways you can measure.

The Canon is 1.2, which the Sigma isn't and it renders like a 1.2.

Most people will care for the former more than the latter, sharpness, focus, etc.

For what it's worth, I have never owned the Sigma, but I did have the 50L a few years back and I absolutely loved it. I found focus speed perfectly acceptable, and I'm not a fan of slow focusing.

Thanks grotty, I find it slow at events with people moving quite a lot. What sort of subjects were you shooting?
 
It makes a difference what body it is on also I think.

With a 7d and 1d every lens I used felt like it had instant focusing speed at any distance, it was ridiculous

People, mainly. My offspring are a pretty good test of AF speed. It's not on par with the very fast focusing Canon lenses such as the 24-70 or 70-200, but I didn't find it so slow as to miss shots or annoy me. I used it on 5DIII and a mark I.

This absolutely. The Sigma is a peach and in every way is the 'better' lens, but I'd take the 50L every time. Even at f1.4 so like for like the Canon just renders beautifully.

The only slight sticking point would be AF speed for the L, it's just about ok for events (I used it for a wedding last week) but the Sigma is quicker.
 
Tough choice I’ve gone with the sigma...may yet keep the canon if it doesn’t get a good price.
