Yes
Attached it to my camera and the lens just fell apart on me :( gutted loved that lens, I know they have a poor rep but I've never man handled it before. I take good care of my kit.

Brought it off Kerso, probably over 12 months old now. Would I be best off just buying a new one?

Send a picture to Canon and ask them if all their kit is this good.

Do you have an email address to hand?

If Canon won't replace it I'd say you were stuffed - if you look at about 8 O'clock inside the lens body, just in from the 'C' of Canon, it looks like the plastic is broken. I'm guessing if you looked after it, you might be able to blag it on manufacture defect - worth a try.

If you are really careful you can push it back together, it just clicks on.

I had one that fell apart, I pushed it back and it was fine.

Another fell on the floor and broke into two. I put it back and it worked albeit the AF was sticking. I sold it on Ebay as manual focus and got almost £40 after fees!

So give it a go fixing it, nothing to lose :)

Yup, thats correct. Also the other part, front element? Has x2 very small bits that have snapped too.

Ok thanks, I think I will email Canon first and Kerso to see where I stand.

I cant quite believe that it just literally feel in two! :(

Isn't that a washing machine drum?:)

Mine has lasted years without any problems, dropped it a few times too!

Dread to think what would have happened if it fell from more and a foot! Do you have the mk2?

Gut it and turn it into a desk tidy....

:)

Sam

Probably why amongst other names they are known as the 'plastic fantastic'.

Mines been going for years, I did drop in once when I was cleaning the camera and it bounced all the way down the stairs. I got to the bottom assured that it would be in a hundred pieces but it was fine!

Great little thing!

Purchased the lens in 11/09 so its out of warranty. Do you think I can get it fixed? Or will I just have to stump up for a new one?

Anyone use the Sigma version?

Sigma don't do a 50mm f/1.8 but they do do a 50mm f/1.4 which is supposed to be better than the Canon 50mm f/1.4. They also do a 50mm f/2.8 but I'm not sure what that's like. Bothare significantly more expensive than the Canon 50mm f/1.8.

Got my MK1 in 1987 as the kit lens on a Eos 650. Its still going strong and gets quite a bit of use. So they are pretty reliable.

OP Do you want to replace your fifty, I have a mark i that I am thinking of selling to fund a Sigma 24-70

Yup I certainly want a replacement. How does the mrkI compare to the mrkII?

I suppose you could cite the EU regulation that extends the guarantee, but this hasn't been fully integrated into UK law and I gather it can be tricky. Might be worth a try, and you're still within the two year cut off. http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bills/article-1677034/Two-year-warranty-EU-law.html

Thanks will look into it

It has the same if not slightly better image quality, this will be argued, a larger manual focus ring and is made from metal. Also have a scale window. I haven't heard of one falling apart. I have it for sale here they are more expensive.

Depending on how much you paid for it then you could mention consumer regulations. If it was less than £100 new then you're in cheap tat territory.

No harm in writing to canon mentioning this failure has shaken your confidence in the brand. You might get a money off voucher for a replacement :) I'd be more likely to buy from a UK retailer this time though as you have much stronger consumer rights than with an overseas one, however good they are. Worth talking to where you bought it from originally they may also offer a good will discount on a replacement too.

First time I have seen an "exploded" view (sorry for the pun) of a modern lens. They do like to use as much plastic as possible don't they.
You could always buy an adaptor off EBay (about £7.95), and get an old Takumar manual focus lens (55 f2 or f1.8) for about £20. They are abound forty years old, built like a tank and have good glass.

There is a guide to disassembly and reassembly at http://www.ejarm.com/photo/ef5018iidis/. It may help. Certainly worth a go if your lens is not working. If it works you have saved yourself a few quid. If it does not work you will be no worse off.

There was another guide somewhere that had better pictures but I cannot find it now.

I think Ian is considered a UK retailer?

Ah ok, and it will fit a 400D and 40D? How much are you asking for it?
