Hi guys, just thought id share with the whole world that iv just ordered a 50mm 1.4 from ebay, Ok, its gotta come from Hong Kong, but for £149 i cant complain!!

When it comes i'll take some snaps and show it off.. Im well pleased!! lol

Here is the item number just incase anyone else wants one.. 220137233882

Cool, I love my 50mm lens, just be aware that you might have to pay importtax and vat when it goes through customs.

I have the cheap 1.8 version which I got of ebay second hand. It's the best lens I have, even thought the auto focus has packed up. I'd love to get a 1.4, I'll look forward to seeing your shots on TP

I love the results my 50mm gives me but struggle sometimes to find inspiration to shoot with it lol

It's quite good at collecting dust. I have the 1.8 :)

Iv heard a lot of people saying they dont use it much! i think it would be on most of the time!! lol.. Iv got a few things from ebay, My flash for 1, its the canon 580, i got a great price for it and the best thing.. NO TAX!! they send it as a 'Gift' and bobs ur auntie.. something like that..

Anyway, i cant wait now.. even if i do only use on occations, i couldnt let it go for that price.. im SURE it'll come in handy..

Watch this space..

lol..

Don't forget to share the images you get using it with us! :woot:

Out of a matter of interest... do many of you have a 50mm F1.8 then replace it with a 50mm F1.4?

I'll share as long as they come out good!! hehe.. Im sure they will..

I cant answer that Janice as this is my first Nifty, But i much prefer the look and feel of the 1.4, and i imagine i would have upgraded to it eventualy if i did have the 1.8..

I find it amazing you forgot to include the postage costs involved with this ... Seeing as how they are over a quarter of the purchase costs.

I also love this bit of their advert ...

"We will choose best shipment method and avoid custom issue."

Then two lines further down ...

"We do not responsible for any tax and custom charges"

Best of luck

:canon:

The 50 1.4 is my 'see in the dark' lens. Focuses fast and takes some unbelievable shots in not a lot of light..... apart from just being a sharp lens for normal shooting.

That does seem cheap most others are £40 more expencive on ebay good luck with your buy

I have the 1.8 and use it quite often, one day I will replace it with the 1.4 as apparently the IQ difference is noticeable.

I have the 1.4. My decision to go for this over the 1.8 was the extensive review from dpreview. After the comparision, it was not up for question. Luvverly lens.

Dpreview or fredmiranda?

I've almost given up on DPreview as it seems to be a fight between canon & nikon owners at times. You also get the feeling that people rate the lenses to justify their expense at purchasing them.

I have to say this forum seems more 'honest' (if that's the right word). :D Perhaps because it's more uk based?

I'd be interested in some thoughts on this as the 50mm 1.4 is on my want list, but I do have a collegue telling me the 50mm 1.8 is almost just as good for a lot less money.

I have a 50mm 1.8, but went for a 30mm f1.4. On digital I think 50mm is too long. It's easy enough to use your foot-zoom to get the distance, but 50mm is just too narrow a FOV for me. The 30mm f1.4 is excellent, both for low light and (very!) selective DOF.

Hum - closest new is a 24mm or 35mm F1.4 - both around the £900 - which is way outside my price range.

Now where's that lottery win :D

That's undoubtedly true, the 1.8 is a bargain for the money. The build quality is very cheap and plastic though, whereas the 1.4 is a solidly built metal lens. The 1.4 also has more aperture blades for smoother, rounder oof highlights. In the end it comes down to being that half stop faster which is what you pay for. For the same reasons, those who really need to get the shot whatever the conditions will go for the 1.2 and consider it money well spent.

Janice - I had the 1.8, and have just arrived to find the 1.4 I bought from Diego Garcia has arrived...
Am about to box up the 1.8 and post it to it's new owner - a TP member !
Also, just sent off the money for the S/H 70-200 2.8 IS to yet another TP member, so will be carting some fancy gear back to Spain in about 10 days..
Better get some work done to pay for it all...

The 1.8 is fantastic value, but so far, the 1.4 feels so much better, but at a price...

is the 1.4 variant much better/quicker at focusing, cause i found the 1.8 too slow compared to 70-200 2.8. I have been thinking about getting something faster than 1.8 for night photography...

'Although it is soft wide open, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens is sharp at f/2 and very sharp when stopped down to f/2.8 or narrower. Corners are soft until f/2 for 1.6x' whats the point having 1.4 if its soft and only usable at f2, also 'The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens features a quiet but not-so-well-damped Micro USM (Ultrasonic Motor) motor' i dont think il bother with this now:)

Ok, some mixed opinions here, thats good, there would be no debate if theings were Black and White!! Did u see what i did there?? Black and White.. Photography forum... Ahh forget it.. lol..

Anyway, my lens turned up this morning.. Who thought it would'nt turn up?? hehe.. Its a nice lens.. it s heavier than my kit zoom and feels like quality.. Compared to the kit!!

Im gonna try post some pics from it later, its raining and pretty misserable here atm.. Ahh.. but its a 1.4!! i dont need light!!! i forgot!!.. lol.. Chat soon..

the 1.4 is a lovely lens - i've not been able to make a single criticism of it so far...... Build is noticeably better than the 1.8 although i've heard IQ is similar. I wouldn't mind the 1.2 though - but what a chunk of glass that is!!!

If it is any help all the pictures in this thread are with the 1.4. All have the exif and some are wide open at 1.4. I think 'soft' that you mention is more for lab test conditions than real life use.

Oh and remember they are full frame shots on the 5D and none are cropped.

It's at least as quick, probably quicker - just checked. :)

I'd think again if I were you. No lens gives it's best performance till stopped down a little. Having said that I have no complaints about the lens wide open at all. Don't forget that even if you subsequently take the shot stopped down, you're getting a brighter viewfinder image and quicker, easier focusing. Reportage types who have to get the shot go for this lens for those reasons rather than any soul searching over optical quality. This is the lens more than any other that I'd love to use on a full frame camera!

It's significantly dearer than the 1.8, but still a pretty cheap lens when you consider the whole line up, and I'm surprised more people don't go for it.

Nice lens you will love it.

and you saved yourself £20 over UK price.

im going to buy a 1.4 before christmas and hand my 50mm f1.8 down to my dad as i know he;ll make use of it :D

but yeh the fact i can upgrade a lens and pass the old one on is a plus point for me :D plus kerso has it for £185+£10 delivery which seems a damn good deal! :D

Used up close and wide open the dof field is knife edge.

This is hand held, 1/40th at f1.4, 100 ISO and focused on the 'L'

Well a 6mm knife edge anyway :)

It's a lovely lens, on a cropped digital sensor it makes a great portrait lens (see below) and the aperture ring allows me to use it on my older film SLR's

As a carry about it's permanently on my camera, it's light, fast and amazing value for money.

Aperture ring? You must have an earlier version.

Sprog is a Nikon user as well according to the exif...
