i was having a flick through a mag the other day.

and theres a section on making cash from your photos.

in it theres a section about on-line libraries and they say they dont generally except photos smaller than 50mb????

thats huge! the biggest file ive managed to get out of my camera is 7mb?

whats going on?

uncompressed 16bit tiff files generated from raw files will be 50mb easy ! :) try doing save as from photoshop (or similar) and choose 16 bit tiff and see what happens ! :) also there are some programs out there that will resize your images.

Sadly mate, that's the standard insisted on by many image libraries these days. Their argument is that anyone who buys your shots could want them for anything from a small print to a giant poster.

My cameras have no trouble meeting that standard from a full frame image, but if there's any degree of cropping involved, and that's often the case with small bird shots, then it's a very tough call to meet those requirements, without the images suffering from interpolation artifacts due to upsizing the image.

The standard seems to have been arbitrarily set at the file size of a 1DSMK2, let's hope the bar isn't raised again when when Canon produce it's replacement which is sure to have loads more pixels. :)

The finished file size when open in photoshop has to be 50mb.

So you will have to upsize to get to the 50mb (and it has to be 8bit NOT 16bit).

rough upsize are

Canon 1Dsmk2 - 16.7mp sensor - upsize an uncropped image 103%
Canon 1Dmk2 - 8.2mp sensor - upsize an uncropped image 145%

Unfortunately Ian a lot libraries, Alamy is one, want jpegs at a compression factor of around 10, but which still produces a 50mb file opened.

Matt - if you're making it to Grendels tonight i have some interpolation software that i'll show you

If you convert a RAW file to a tiff it will be a lot larger.
I'm not sure how big your 7mb RAW file would convert to,
but from a 6mb RAW you get approx 38mb tiff files.
From a 12mb Raw you get approx 69mb tiff files.
And from a 16.7mb Raw you get approx 95mb tiff files.
These are all at 16bit

You can also use interpolation software such as genuine fractuals, or Alien skin Blowup, and not forgetting photoshop itself to enlarge your images to the size required.
But they will have to be of a good standard before enlarging them.

Matt they are 16 bit sizes you mentioned, most agency's ask for 8 bit

The actual sizes for 8bit are:

6mb Raw - 18mb
12mb Raw - 35mb
16.7 Raw - 48mb

All sizes are approximate.

ok thanks for your replies guys,
i think that answers my question :)
