Following on from this thread where I was ready to use my new Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX APO DG HSM lens as a baseball bat it seems that my ire was aimed at the wrong end of what I was holding. It was attached to my brand new 50D.

Look at these two examples.

40D - 50D

Both taken with the sigma, theres a marked difference. I know friday teatime isn't the best time to contact Canon but will I simply be able to send it back to them to get it repaired, or binned and replaced?

looks like a calibration issue - cant you you the adjustment feature to correct this yourself?

I would set up a shot that you can take exactly the same with the 2 bodies (if you still have the 40D) to check for sure.

Also check with Sigma, there have been cases of Sigma lenses needing to be tweaked before they work with new model Canon bodies.

It may be the 50D so you should be able to adjust it for your Sigma lens. Mr. DonnaM has just purchased a 50D with the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 and we have spent many a frustrating hour getting it to focus correctly. Now, thank goodness, the focus is fine.

If you are paying over £1K for a camera should it not work straight out of the box,my 350D did at a third of that price.have canon got quality control; problems here

Its a third party lens - it canot be guaranteed to work with new bodies because they are reversed engineered in the first place. I have even heard firmware updates causing lenses not to work thet same as before.

My sentiments also.

These kind of AF issues aren't a case of it should work out of the box. All lenses and bodies are designed to meet a certain spec. As long as they fall within that range then they meet spec. But you can find a situation where both body and lens are at the limit of the spec in the same direction and this can lead to problems that only calibration will sort - normally this is done for the lens but the body is needed to in order to match the lens to it.

AF Microadjust allows the user, in most cases, to do the calibration themselves rather than sending the gear off and possibly paying for the service too.

If the af in the camera can't be adjusted to correct the problem then I believe Sigma can calibrate your lens to match the body, however it means sending both to them, along with proof that your lens was UK-purchased and/or has had the VAT paid on it, otherwise they will charge you for any work done.

Well, it seems to work better with a Canon lens. How do I get it calibrated with my Sigma's?

thanks Donna.

There seems to be no support for the 50D on Canons website so I was wondering if there was a firmware update that I could download.

The 50D works fine with Canon lenses.

Look at these two examples.

Even your "good" 40D sample is awful, looks like you shot it with a Coke bottle rather than a £700 lens.

Did you test this properly?

handheld from about 100 metres away.

That answers my "did you test properly question" then ;)

Do it properly on a tripod before you send something off would be my advice.

Handholding a long lens to "test" is really not a good idea.
