Upgrading from the 450D, which would you choose?

50D because of better build quality - £500
7D because of better build quality and HD video - £1000
5D Mk i because of better build quality and full frame - £650

I dont wish to put a downer on your poll, but this is impossible without knowing what you want to shoot, assuming in the first place that your budget covered the most expensive option.

If you let us know what you will mainly be shooting, it will help greatly

What are your uses?

Wild life + sports = 7d
Landscapes + portraits = 5d.

If you're considering a 7D, then there's little point to including a 50D as they suit a similar purpose.

I mainly shoot macros/portraits/landscapes. £1000 is the max I'd be willing to spend.

That answered my question then. And I included 50D because it was half the price.

5D it is then. I hope you've got/willing to get some good glass though as full frame camera's need it!

60D must be an option if coming from an EF-S camera, same mem cards, same lenses.

Flip screen for marco and landscapes...ETTL flash controller for portraits.

He can still use his EFS lenses on the 7d. They are not really 'efs' cameras they're just EFS compatable as they can take any lens.

What lenses do you have ?

+1

If you don't have 'decent' glass then you might as well strike the 5D off the list... it used ALL the lens so ideally you need great (if not stunning) glass to get the best out of the camera (IMO of course) :)

If I get the 5d I would have to sell my efs lens (which i have no problem with) but the lens I use the most right now is the 50mm 1.4 which works on the 5d.

I know the 7D is but it is already on the list, as is the 50D.

I would say those were ef-s cameras that are ef compatible, rather than ef-s compatible. Those ef-s lenses are designed specifically for those cameras, not just to be compatible.

Surely the 5D is less demanding than the 7D and the 50D?

In terms of resolution, a 12mp full frame sensor needs a lot less than a 15 or 18mp crop sensor.
Though distortions, vignetting and corner CA are going to be more noticeable on a FF sensor, those can all be corrected effectively in PP.

If the OP is willing to chop/change some lenses it is a no-brainer.

Get the 5D and be happy !

My 2p worth.

I see what you are saying, but as they take any lens (thats the beauty of them) its the full frame bodies that are restricted so really they are the ones that should be labeled 'EF bodies' ;) (and not all crops use sd cards either, in fact most dont but the newer xxxd and 60d do)

Anyway, Ive voted 7d!

Indeed....I would recommend the 7D too ahead of any crop. However with the budget range mentioned I think its very wise to include the 60D. I would actually recommend he 5DmkII for his specific application with an unrestricted budget.

The reason I mentioned memory cards is because the newer rebel-esque bodies appear to be using SD. Going to a 7D will be a bigger jump per MB cost on CF than remaining with SD - which you will already own with the current camera.

Anyway....don't wanna upset the poll anymore ;)
