Facing to possibility of a dead 30D, I'm looking at what to replace it with. I can't afford new, so it has to be second hand. The lenses I have are ok for now, and can't afford a 5D and the new lenses I'd need. So I considered a 7D, but they are still out of my budget. But 50D and 60D might be do-able.

I can see the evolution of the line from my 10D to my 30D and the step to the 50D, but the 60D looks like a totally different line.

Am I right in thinking that the 60D might not be better than the 50D?

I upgraded from the 30D to the 60D and you're right, it feels like a TOTALLY different type of camera. The flip out screen is nice though. There's no micro adjust on it, which the 50D does have. I'd definitely be leaning towards the 50D knowing what I do now, but you really need to look at them side by side to see if one is better for you than the other.

To be honest, I don't know that I'll use the micro adjust. But..doesn't mean that I won't at some point!

The screen looks like a good toy but I wonder it it would feel more like the cheaper bodies.

If budget is an issue - why not consider a 40D ?

I had a 40D and a 50D and found them so alike. It's always been a hot topic but I personally found the 40D better when the ISO needed to be pushed a bit.

The only reason I would take a 50D over the 40D would be for huge prints.

Good point. I do tend to shoot a lot in dark settings so that might help. And I don't plan on doing huge prints.

Mind you...the ability to shoot video might be useful. But am I right in saying the 7D is the one I'd want to do that?

I didn't think I'd use micro-adjust on my 50D until I bought a Tamron 17-50mm VC last week.

I'm not interested in buying a new DSLR body but when I did follow the Canon reviews I read several which weren't too kind towards the 50D, to put it mildly. The 7D also had it's image quality critics but from what I've read the 60D and later Canon bodies with the same chip seem to be getting slightly better reviews than the older 7D and 50D designs. I've also read that the plethora of front / back focus issues that seem to plague some Canon cameras / users seem to be lessened with the 60D with some speculating that even though there's no micro adjustment option something is happing automatically.

YMMV and none of this may be true but there seem to be a lot of people happy with 60D's and the main complaints I've read seem to relate to squishy controls and the lack of magnesium bragging rights (a mostly facile issue IMVHO) so if faced with the choice of a 50D or a 60D I personally would be heading for the 60D and as a bonus you really can't imagine how handy articulated screens are until you have one.
