I have searched and i have read factual answers etc and cant seem to wack my head around it.

I dont want to "upgrade" as its a higher number i need/want a body with wireless ettl built in so the 60/7D it is lol

Cant afford a 7D so

IF i get a 60D what will i loose over the 50D

Please help lol

Also does anyone have any idea how long the range is on the wireless ettl of the 60D?

Thanks

Danny

The 50D is a great camera.
Is it really worth upgrading just for the sake of wireless ettl?

Personally I would say it would be cheaper and better to learn how to use flashes in manual mode when off camera.
All my off camera flash work is done in manual mode with wireless triggers. Trust me its not that difficult a concept to adopt.

i would like to retain ettl though so although yes its an awesome camera - i cant see any other way except using a 580 which is expensive

What kind of environment would you be using off camera flash in?

I use fully manual off camera flash, triggering two Nissin Di622's with my D700 as my Nissins are canon fit, so I fire them with the D700's flash as optical slave. Its really not hard to do. Just take 1 shot, if the power is too high, dial the flashes down a bit. After a while you soon learn what sort of power you need.

Im sure the 50d's onboard flash is capable of triggering off camera flashes as optical slaves in the same way is it not?

You could pick up a ST-E2 wireless trigger for about £100 second hand. It's what I use. Good for about 10m range.

I went throught the same dlimena and convinced myself I couldn't afford a 7D but.......

Picked one up from Kerso for under £1K and when you consider the built in wireless flash trigger and the fact that you're probably going to have to go out and buy new memory cards for the 60D (IIRC the 50D uses CF?) then the £300 or so difference isn't actually that bad. On top of that you're getting a lot more camera for your money :)

is 7D mag? it is right .. so really only upgrade is a 7D or a 580 or an st-e2?

argh :@

hang on ..

a 580 EXii will trigger wirelessly a pair of 430s as slaves

BUT i thought on camera flash wasnt used for a reason?

So why would i want a flash on my camera that costs £300 when im told not to use it as its crap? if i can see a reason for needing a 580 on camera for home flash studio work then ill get one .. if i cant i wont

What do you want to shoot? It depends on what lighting you need then.

On board flash is fine sometimes, especially if you use a modifier.

Hi again Danny

The 580 I suggested on the other thread is acting only as a master to trigger the slaves...it won't be actually firing a flash as part of the exposure. You don't need a 580 to use ETTL, you can use the ST-E2 at a cost of £170 or a clone at £100 (new prices).

I don't believe the ST-E2 is worth the cost, would I want to part with £100 on a chinese clone when I could put that cash towards a 580 which his the master function, the power, weatherproof, full 180degree twisting head amongst other things - well thats the call I made. I went for the flash.

If you choose to go fully manual in the future, then you will ultimately have a third flash in your bag. Now I know virtually nothing about lighting, but I think 3 lights are quite effective as key, fill and hair/seperation lights.

You could go with the camera upgrade which the other thread spawned, but I think the extra flash even at the increased cost is probably the better all round setup - although you will be £300+ lighter in the wallet. You will retain your 50D, official grip, batteries, CF cards, alloy body, micro adjusts. I know with an upgrade you will gain video and flexible screen...I'm not sure what else but if you wanna check out DP Review using their side by side comparisons, thats probably the best 'in a nutshell' comparison for what you need. Just add the camera bodies...

Good luck with your decision mate:thumbs:

Lol thanks Andy ..

I think the 580 is the best option as i have flash for hair, flash for background and then a fill light SHOULD i need it .. i would imagine 2 OCF to be enough but 3 cant hurt!

I guess the 580 would also help shoud i be asked to shoot an event? Hmmm

Dont like te 60D anyway but now i have an option ill discard that thought

2 x 430 exII
1x 580 exii .. sounds better :)

Did you sell your 50D yet?

What did you decide to do in the end?

keep the 50 .. as i dont like the 60 anyway its more like a kids toy than an upgrade

and find something to fire ettl either the ST-E2 or the 580 exII

i figured by having the 580 instead of the st .. IF i want to go manual i will have that 3rd flash option and ive been playing around tonight with bouncing flash ON camera and had loads of fun

Danny i managed to get a 7D for 875 pounds brand new (for the body) at christmas. i had to go collect it as he was quite close to me. he owns an it company so can get stuff abit cheaper. if you want i can text him tomorrow and see if he still has some and you can ring or text him. its all legit too get a invoice and guarantee plus they are all from the uk not grey imports.

thanks mate kind of you but for the cash i dont think its worth it for me

if i upgrade i should go full frame

im only buying EF lenses ready anyway so a 7D or 60D would of been stupid!

At least as i say if i buy the 580 i have a 3rd flash

thats fine mate :) i was either looking at the 5d mk2 but i went with the 7D because i have a few lenses that wouldnt have worked on full frame.

Which is what I said already!

Hi Danny

Don't really want to open this thread up again but have just read your "60D is a kids toy" comment.

I use one as a third body and you are right it does feel nasty compared to my 1D3, for example, but it does do exactly what it says on the box REALLY well. It feels nasty and plastic but modern thermplastics are really quite good nowadays.

IMHO, not much of an upgrade on your 50D anyway; unless you need one of the specific features of the more modern cam ?

Happy shooting.
