Yes
Well, long time I have been looking into my next body, mainly the 7d.

Had a look of it in jessops and fell in love! Love the feel and just general better built/feel/ controls etc over the 450d

1. Am I right in assuming the 50d will be pretty similar feel?

But then, I can't quite afford it, and is it worth it with the lenes I have.

10-22mm
70-300mm
60mm macro

all canon.

So, never really lookin into the 50d much I had a quick peek online, looks pretty good.

I wanted better fps
faster camera in general
better AF
better image quality.

Would you say the 50d will cover these?

If you could also mention anything I have missed that is an up from my 450d please?

I personally jumped from the 400D (although still have it as backup) to the 50D. Wouldn't really look back. The feel of the camera and the results are a good step up in all ways. THe 50D offers a lot more and meets all what you want.

Robbo - I'm in a similar position to you, in that I've enjoyed my 450D immensely however am ready to take my photography to the next level and felt that a body upgrade would be a worthwhile investment.

I considered both the 50D and 7D and nearly bought a nearly new 2nd hand 50D, but in the end after reading all the reviews and threads on the forums have decided to go with the 7D. Just felt that if I bought the 50D I'd be wanting to buy a 7D within 12-18 months and I'm hoping that I'll get a lot more use than that out of the new camera.

From what I've read there really isn't a huge difference between the 2 unless you are a pixel peeper, I just felt that the newer camera would be better future proofed when it comes to upgradeitis lol

Until I got my 50D I hadn't realised how useful the rear dial is on the xxD bodies. I looked at an entry level Canon yesterday and I really struggled to work it without the rear dial.

I'm not so sure that the AF is much better... especially AI Servo. Depends on the lens used of course but just my take on it.

Think (not out of experience.. reviews) the 7D is better at AF

I went from a 450D to a 50D. a superb upgrade, but now i'm looking to go upgrade again! Can't decide whether to sell mine, or keep it as a backup body.

I went from 450D to 50D as the 7D had just come out and was at a silly price. My initial reasons for the upgrade - I wanted a solid chunky camera, big LCD screen and a faster shooting speed. 50D gave me that and a lot more :)

I went from a 450D to a 40D and now a 50D.
I really liked them all but the 50D does have an edge of the 40D.
The 50D will certainly improve all the areas you have mentioned and I've noticed a difference with the shots taken with my 10-22 compared to my 450D / 40D.
I can't compare any shots taken with other lenses because apart from the 10-22, I upgraded my lenses to L when I bought the body.
One thing is for sure, when I went from the 450D to the 40D I certainly saw a difference in the build and the IQ of the photos.
So going from a 450D to a 50D you should also fine the same.

thanks for all the input so far.

One more question,

is it worth paying the extra money to get the 7D? or does the price difference not justify it?

Thanks

There have been several posts on the forum stating that a 7D will punish consumer lenses so you might want to consider upgrading your 70-300.
I've never used the 60mm macro but the 10-22 should produce some amazing shots with a 7D.
Personally I would go the 50D route and lens upgrade unless money is not an issue.

I have heard a few things like that too.

But, how will it cause a worse image than my 450d with the 70-300mm

It wont cause a worse image but you probably wont find much of a difference in IQ.
A 7D would push a lens like that to it's limits and this may show up things like fringing and CA even more so.

I'm only going on what I've read, perhaps a few 7D owners can offer you better advice.

As for my experience, I thought the Tamron 18-270VC was a really good lens and I liked the first few test shots I did with my 50D.
However, there really is no comparison between the lens and my 24-105L IS and 70-200L IS.
The general consensus is invest in good lenses before upgrading a body unless you have already got the lenses.
Personally I think you'd be wasting your money just by upgrading the body to a 7D.
Remember, the 450D is a consumer camera where the 7D is more of a pro / consumer body.
At this level of body I think most people would advise you to consider in lenses as well.
A 50D would keep you more than happy for quite some time when upgrading from a 450D plus you would have some spare cash to invest in a lens.

Im not one for going into things half way if that makes sense? I would rather miss the next step and just go the full hog with what ever is the best.

I was mainly going for the body next as I am happy with the pictures I can produces with the current lenses at the minute, it was the fast fps, more fps, better metering, 100 view finder, the AF features.

I know I may not get better IQ as a result but I will get the benefit of the other features.

I will also be future proofing my self for my next batch of lens upgrades next year.

hmmm....what to do what to do...

No such thing as future proofing when it comes to DSLR bodies, there will always be the next, latest greatest model.
I'm curious to know what improvements you are expecting to see with a 7D compared to people who use a 40D with better quality lenses.
Personally I fail to see the point in having a camera like the 7D unless I would see an amazing difference in my photos using a consumer super zoom lens.
You might see a better overall photo if you wanted an even tighter crop or do some pixel peeping.
Anyway, I have nothing more to add, good luck with your decision :)

well I aim to up my glass next year. then will have the camera to match.

But for the pictures I take at the minute certain main features will be very handy, like the 8fps, 16raw burst, zone AF, 100% view finder, better noise on high iso (which I somtimes need 800 to get shutter speed at sports).

Those features alone without any image quality improvements would suit me fine.

still doing my research, I just dont see the point in going to get a 50d to match my glass more for the price, changing glass, then still ultimately wanting the 7d and changing again lol
