I'm not sure if I'm just getting a little paranoid but I feel that my 50D is shooting underexposed, I'm wondering is there any way of testing this?

Also is it recommend that the camera is serviced if there is an issue

What settings are you using ? Are you sure the exposure has not been turned down ? Are you able to upload a picture of the screen on top of the camera ?

All my Canon DSLR seem to underexpose. I read an article a few years comparing Nikon and Canon exposure systems. The conclusion was that Canon favored protecting the highlights in an image where Nikon preferred to look after the shadows. Now how true this was I don't know. However I always shoot with at least +1/2 stop but usually +1 stop with my Canons. This goes for my very old 300D through 20D to 5D 1Ds and 5Dlll.

Dial in a some exposure compensation and you will be fine.
Don't think there is anything wrong with your camera.

The 50D has a tendency to be better when exposing to the right (usually about +1

Music to my ears!

Ever since I got my 60D I've felt that it under exposed but, bowing to the wisdom of the mighty Canon, I assumed it was me who was in error...

Good to know I'm not alone in this, I might be just getting a bit paranoid around it.

This was one of the first things I noticed having recently switched over from Nikon. I used to be really happy with the images as they were metered in the Nikon, the Canon however does seem too under for my liking so, as others have said, I usually have at least 2/3 +EV dialled in.
