My bro had this with his 50D , common problem apparently - needs a new shutter button, cant help with cost as it was done under warranty.

i have heard, through trawling through google thats it seems to be a common problem.

anyone else who's experienced this?

The issue is that dust and grease can work their way under the shutter release button over time giving an unreliable contact.

Quick fix that might work if you are careful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tB_gSqyidI0

The isopropyl alcohol dissolves any grease between the contacts and gets flushed out.

sod it, just went and bought some and tried it, its currently upside down and probably dry by now, but im going to leave it a few hours to be on the safe side,
will update and let you know if its worked:shrug::eek:

i did research before hand and isopropyl alchohol is a no1 electrical contact cleaner, fingers crossed...

I'm not sure I would have the courage to do it on my own camera - I'd probably wimp out and send it in to get reapired in case I made things worse!

I'd be interested to hear the results of your experiment though!"

I had this and it went to the shop and was fixed with several days.

The shutter contact is a metal disc ( in cross section. This can flatten and the button requires a harder and harder push to work (like this | )

WORKED!!!:nuts::nuts:

so glad it did..
it must of just been an accumilation or dust and crud between the disc's..

oh well, it's now tried and tested with good results:thumbs:

Result! Worth remembering that one...

What other problems are common on 50D's? Thinking of getting one..

Always a great feeling when you overcome a problem like this without having to resort to the bother and cost of having is done proffesionally, well done sir.

got to remember this if it happens to me, thanks :)

glad it worked, out of curiosity, where is this alcohol available from?
thanks

Good to hear you got that sorted easily enough westly, I have had mine for 18months now and have had no problems whatsoever with it. I shall be listing it up next week for sale though due to upgrade :D

That's interesting, had a similar problem with a 20D that I sold (telling the buyer first)

i really want to upgrade too, but no one will but it now as i done a diy fix:lol:

i bought electrical contact cleaner from a car spares shop, it contained isopropyl alchohol and carbon dioxode(gas).

i sprayed it in the lid untill i had a spoon full and poured it down the battery shoot, left it upside down on the angle so it dripped out the shutter button (also pressed the shutter button several times to get it through and adjitate it) after a couple of hours i turned it back over on the angle again, but this time facing battery door down just incase any fluid got trapped and didnt evaporate, left it like this for another hour, and bobs your uncle:D

you can get neat (uncompresed) isopropyl from places, i tried a chemist but he said there not allowed to stock it anymore and had to be ordered in, and i couldnt be bothered to drive around looking for it, so i popped in the car spares a few doors up and got as mentioned above, electrical contact cleaner... does what it said on the tin, cleaned my electrical contact..

anyway, hope this helps anyone in the future who might have doubts about using this method, i was dubious myself, but if it needed replacing anyway then i had nothing to loose.

thanks for replies, sounds good, glad it worked, as my mate had the same problem on his 30d, and he paid £140 to have it fixed, so that's a massive saving!

Did see a camera on Ebay where the owner used this method, cured the shutter problem, but messed up the top lcd display so only some of the characters displayed

Think if mine goes I will have a bash at the full take apart job and see if that works, easy to say though when the camera has already done 70K clicks

So glad i found this thread. had the same problem and decided to go down the clean with alcohol route, worked a dream with no problems. saved me a load of money, Thanks

Wow, threads 3 years old, blast from the past lol
