Does anyone know what the shuuter life is rated to on these?

I have managed to play about with it a little bit so far and have to say I am quite impressed. Still need to upgrade my lenses in the future to make the most out of it, but happy so far. And there are a lot of settings to change :help:.

Going to a falconary place on the weekend with a m8 and not sure what lens i should use, anyone suggest which of my lenses to use?

Thanks

indoors or outdoors and how big is it ?

might want the big sigma if they're miles off or the nifty if they're sitting still. I have yet to crack not taking my whole kit bag with me when I go out :D

I have been a 50D owner for about 3 months now and I am loving it, I upgraded from a 20D when my other half decided to join my hobby and had my 20D off me.

Mini - yeah you know what they say if you can't beat'em, join'em!!!..

Only had my 50D for just over a week, just about when the weather turned s^$£y and now I'm struggling to get out!!!..

The little time I have had with it though - Excellent. As the others have said though, now need to get some more CF cards.

Apologies for mixing this thread up a bit ! thats an excellent night shot Pete, something to aspire to I think !

Thanks very much Simon, admittedly one of my better one's, more luck than judgement!

Finally managed to upgrade from my 400D to the 50D today :woot:

Just about to break into the box and suss it out, what I'm after is if anyone knows where I can purchase a cheap spare battery or two? I know I bought 2 from 7dayshop in the past for my 400D and they never let me down for the price.

TIA :thumbs:

I got mine from 7dayshop.

Got 2 for £5.95 each IIRC.

I do find their website confusing to browse, and it took a while to find the bits, but they're there... hidden.

As the others have said though, now need to get some more CF cards.

Oh I know that feeling, When I first got it, I got one of my 2 GB cards out and loaded it into the camera, I was used to seeing over 250 in the shots remainig on the top of the 20D with a clean card, ahh, ohh well less than half that if I use 2GB cards on the 50D, went to 7dayshop and ordered a few 4GB cards.

As SWMBO said, "its never ending", thats true, I found the limitations my 28-135m lens the other day, dont get me wrong its a cracking general use lens, so I have upgraded to the 24-70mm f2.8 L, then have to tell the other half that I now need to go out and buy a new Circular Polariser, does mean that I have been able to give her the old 72mm CP for use on her lens.

The one thing I haven't done a lot of with the 50D is BIF shots, in fact we went out a couple of weeks ago specifically to do some BIF test shots, but on the day,the birds just weren't flying. This was the only real chance of the day - an opportune quick shot through a gap in the trees, and that goose was really motoring!!

It's a huge crop, but the shot was with all AF points enabled which is pretty impressive against that background. To add insult to injury it's one of Jan's. :D

50D and 300mm 2.8L with 2X TC (600mm) 800 ISO.

Hi CT,
Huge admirer of your work. The fox shot is outstanding for me.
Can I ask what setting you generally use please. In particular, focus mode/af points and whether you use focus on the *.
I only ask as I have always struggled with moving subjects. Any tips would be most appreciated. And I do realise it's not just down to settings!

Thank you.
Graham

How many of you here have gone from 40D to 50D ??

I'm looking for a 2nd body and the 50D seems to fit better than the 5D2, as I can get myself a lens (or two) as well. My choice is a 50D with the 70-200 f4, which is a good all round lens.

Can I can use the grip off of my 40D on the 50 ? And, how many shots to a 4Gb card (I shoot in RAW) ?

Steve

You can use the 40D grip on the 50D, yes.

As for a 4Gb card you can fit roughly 170 to 180 photo's on a card. I filled up 3 cards yesterday :eek:

You probably need to update the adobe camera raw plugin.

Lots of talk on this topic on the forum, but a query for 50D owners.

I've moved the autofocussing operation to the AF-ON button, and am getting to like it. Lots of debate, but I'm coming round to the advantages of it.

But, if I'm on AI-Servo mode tracking a moving object, do I keep my finger on the AF-ON button and press the shutter release button at the same time, or, do I have to release the AF-ON button before pressing the shutter release button?

The manual isn't very clear on this.

Pete

Any excuse to post a few shots as I can't get out at the moment! :gag:

You keep your finger on the button Pete so that the AF is making tiny adjustments as necessary right until the moment you press the shutter button.

The Jackdaw and Robin were with the 500mm f4L and 1.4X converter at 800 ISO. The fox was with the 300mm 2.8L at 1600 ISO.

thanks, that very good noise control on the fox image for 1600 :thumbs:

Thanks. The light was absolutely awful and I was shooting into a dark wood right on the limit for hand holding. It was pure luck I picked up the 300mm 2.8 that morning, I'd have really been struggling with the 500mm.

Okey Dokey, thanks very much CT.

Isn't that a little strange for motion tracking? I just keep the shutter button pressed halfway down on the normal setting. What's the advantage of moving the function?

I still don't see what the difference between AI focus and AI servo..

They both seem to do the same thing to me..

A1 Focus is a combination of Single Shot and Servo AF. In theory if a subject suddenly starts moving it switches to servo and is supposed to be predictive, anticipating the subjects line and speed of movement. In practice it's absolute pants - have nothing to do with it. :gag:

I dunno why Canon persist with it tbh, they don't feature it on 1 Series bodies IIRC.

Thankee. :) Yep - the site is due for a bit of a overhaul.

Does anybody know what the latest version of firmware is for the 50D ??

Ah that's good, mine's come with 1.0.6 loaded.....

Took for a test this afternoon and got some cracking pictures of the wife (but I'm not allowed to show any pictures of her, it's more than my life's worth!)

Anyways, here's a quick snap I did at the local lake....

Not the best I know, but just getting used to the camera/lens set up. Like I said, I took a couple of the wife and the were bang on for sharpness, colour rendition etc - I think I'm going to love this combination :D

Steve

You've not done nowt wrong Steve! :thumbs:

For anyone who has to do the upgrade, I've just done two bodies and it was pretty straightforward. Just download the firmware update, double click the icon to extract the file, then drag the extracted file onto a formatted CF card. Insert the CF card in the camera, scroll to firmware version in the camera menu, and do the upgrade. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH BATTERY POWER OR YOU'RE ON MAINS POWER. IF THE UPGRADE FAILS IT'S A CANON SERVICE CENTRE JOB TO SORT IT.

If you're unsure - don't do it!

Seems you also have to upgrade Canon DPP and any other Canon software you use once you've done the upgrade.

This is from the upgrade page...

Notes:
When updating to Firmware Version 1.0.6, please also update the Digital Photo Professional, Picture Style Editor, ZoomBrowser EX, and ImageBrowser software to the following versions or later.For details, please refer to the Firmware Q&A section.

* Digital Photo Professional : Version 3.5.2 (Windows/Macintosh)
* Picture Style Editor : Version 1.4.2 (Windows/Macintosh)
* ZoomBrowser EX : Version 6.2.1c (Windows)
* ImageBrowser : Version 6.2.1c (Macintosh)

I only use DPP out of that list and it seems I'm on Version 3.6.0.0 anyway, so I've nothing to do.

What does the new firmware do? Is it worth it?
