I'm looking at getting a battery grip for my 50D and was wondering if there is any major differences between the canon own and Hahnel brand models

I've used the Hahnel and Canon and both Work the Same ... Canon is slightly better build

I'm not sure if mine is Hahnel, but I bought a cheap grip for a 30D (Assuming they are the same size?), it is not branded but works perfectly, i would have expected no more from the Canon Grip, so im happy :)

The ones made by meike (also sold as "linkdelight" I think) seem to come highly recommended by all the people who use them. Apparently they are virtually identical to the OEM grips.
If I was buying a battery grip, that's what I'd go for.

I had a Hahnel on my 50D. It was OK other than having a habit of working loose. When it did, the camera shut down. Not good if you are taking a picture, potentially much worse if it is writing to the card.

I was going to buy a copy grip for my 50D but in the end settled for a used Canon BG-E2N off another forum for £50 delivered with a couple of batteries thrown in. They come up quite often on the forums if you are prepared to wait a while.

I've used Zeikos and Phottix grips and have been delighted with both. That said, for the same money I'd have gone for a used Canon if there had been any available at the time. The reason ... Badge snobbery only. Canon's price is hideous but as has been said, you should be able to pick one up for £50ish if you can wait for one.

Really?

The genuine Canon grip has never unscrewed itself from the 7D.

This is the sort of comment made by someone who either cannot afford the better product or does not appreciate the difference and tries to cover by swearing blind that there is no difference.

Of course Aldi produce is as good as Waitrose. (not)
