While on a photographic holiday a friend had his camera go down but was fortunate and had a back up at the hotel.

I use a 7D and don't have a back up....this got me thinking.

My thoughts took me to consider a 50D as back up, having decided on it I had a bit of luck and could now stretch to a 2nd hand 5D mk ii, a full frame has to be better, doesn't it? [Landscapes etc]

So decision time:-
1] Stay with the 7D and have a 50D as a back up
or
2] Step up to a 5D mkii and use the 7D as a back up and for sports.

Advice please, don't know if I'm getting carried away with the 5D

I have the second combo. Works well. don't know about 50d tho'. FF is great. Depends on your lenses too.

Personally I'm not a fan of the 7D, so I'd use the 5DmkII and 50D as backup. While I'm sure the 7D is a decent camera, I've never used one but I've seen someone I know using the same lenses as I've got on a 7D and it looks poor compared to a 50/60D. I honestly don't know why as I've never got around to asking them, as it would come across as talking down to them; "hey, why are your images poor, when mine are better using a cheaper lens on a better and a worse camera?".

All I know is that I've used my current lenses on a 30D, 60D and 5Dmk3, and I know the quality I'd get from both so would suggest things the way I have, for that reason alone.

5D mark 2 as main for landscape, 7D as backup, IF you have full frame lenses.

7D is quite a bit more advanced than 5D2, but for landscape, you can't beat the dynamic range of 21mp full frame sensor.

As you say, the 7D is more advanced (from the AF side of things) but the sensor on the 5D is better. I suppose it really comes down to what you photograph at the end of the day.

Indeed, 7D feels like a modern camera whereas the 5D mark 2 feels like a previous generation camera.

My former housemate has a 7D, and I have a 5D mark 2. The 7D feels like a machine, and the grip feels much better in hand. Overall as, 7D feels much better to use. But I feel the sensor let it down after the photo has been taken.

During my wedding, I asked my former housemate to be my photographer. He went with the 5D2 as main with my 24-105 f4L, and 7D as backup with a 70-200 f2.8. On post processing the photos myself, I personally much prefer the 5D2's files in every single way.

As mentioned above - a lot depends on what lenses you have. I have a 5D mkii and love it, but if you have any ef-s lenses they won't fit.

keep the 7d and get yourself a 5d mk2 there both different enough to be useful in their own right
i think you can be the judge of the quality the 7d produces you own one and if you are satisfied with what it produces a 50d will bring nothing to the table so to speak

i like the 5d mk2 it is a very capable camera i also like the 50d i owned both for a while but i think the 7d has more to offer over the 50d

I work for a Construction company who at the end of Contracts normally employ a professional photographer to photograph the end product.

I have done a couple for my own interest and the Company have seen these and are looking for me to do some more [Paid].

I take a lot of sports photos which is why I chose the 7D but would the 5D Mk11 be a step up for the buildings, these are normally used for publicity and often blown up between A3 & A2 and mounted around the offices. Hence why I thought the Full frame would be an improvement.

My normal lenses are EF28-105L and EF100-400L which should function happily and give me a practical working range of 28 - 620mm

Given that you have a couple of L lenses the 5DII is probably the better buy. That said, would the budget stretch to a 6D?
What is starting to scare me is - does the budget stretch to a 2nd hand 5DIII?

Is this starting to get out of control?????

Get a 6D, I have one and I love it, I shoot mainly sports with 2 x 7Ds and the 6D compliments them great for team shots / other types of photography.

I was kidding btw, however I started looking at the 6d/ 2nd hand 5 d2 was eventually swayed by 0% and free grip and now have a shiny 5d3. Think about what you are photographing. The main difference for me is the AF on the 5D3. I enjoy wildlife and bird photography, which is why in the end I went for the 5d3

This is the real difference between the two for most people. Being studio based I've no real need for the extra features of the MKIII, other than the flash sync port. I'm very tempted to save my self a fortune and just buy a hotshoe adapter... or finally go wireless. eek!
