Yes
Looking to get either a 40D or 50D as an upgrade for my 400D, would be very interested to hear people views on the new 50D in use. Some sample images from the 50D would be really good, so time for you new 50D users to show off.

I've recently got a 50D. Like Andrew, I haven't really used it in anger but took some sample shots last weekend and was thrilled with the results. The big thing that struck me immediately was how good the rear screen is. It's so clear and bright!

Did you use flash for any of those macro mate? What flash?

Nope, no flash. All hand held with 100mm Macro :)

Hmmm even at 1/30 shutter that amazing...

yes, rear screen is brilliant, and on Monday night when I was shooting a theatre production with my 50D and 40D, the clarity of the 50D screen was so superior.

Either would be a significant improvement on a 400D - just don't pay the £ 1199 that some UK retailers are flogging 50D body only for! £ 899 for RGB Tech.

Can I ask why your going for a body upgrade? Looking at you sig I think you'd see better gains from some quality glass, I'm not trying to pick holes just wondered what feature it is that tips the balance for you?

To the original Poster... I have upgraded to the 40D from a 400D last week as I could not justify the extra for the 50D....

The 40D is a FAB upgrade from a 400d it really is better... For the price it is at the moment it a bargain to get...

Was it quite a bright day when you took the photos without the flash?

Reasonably, but as the berries are tucked away in hedgerows I had to have the ISO up at 800 to even get 1/30th on occasions!

Here's a squidger from this morning....1/3200 at f/6.3 ISO 800 on a 600/4 with 1.4x T/C

That is seriously nice @ 800ISO :-)

That's terrific Bob. The ISO performance of the 50D really is excellent isn't it? :)

After yesterday's attempts, ISO 800 is nothing to be feared it seems

that is a superb shot, absolutely stunning.
Thanks.....I can shoot squirrels all day in the garden....this is one of this year's young sitting on my shed roof.

Thanks....

Compared to the 30D and 1DII it certainly looks cleaner. I'll see how it holds up against the 5D later but I suspect that it won't be a million miles behind.

Simply Electronics are advertising as in stock at 829 squids. Don't know anything about them howevere!

Cheers

Andrew and Paul.....

I picked this up from the Diwa-labs website.....

The test of the Canon EOS 50D was first made with firmware v.1.0.1, then with an updated firmware, version 1.0.2. The updated version significantly improved color and image noise performance.

Mine was delivered with 1.0.2 but it may be worth you checking.

Bob

Thanks for that Bob, I will indeed check to see what firmware version I have

I want a 50d now :(
The prices that you guys have seen them advertised for, so gutted. The ISO performance is really impressive, and seen as i shoot mainly live music, that is something that really interests me.

I know i know, need more glass really! Haha!

I got mine from DigitalRev via Ebay for £ 769.
I used a coupon from Paypal where they contributed £ 100
So far I have not been asked to pay any duty although I'm aware that a bill from DHL could drop onto the mat any day now.

No way was I going to pay the £ 1199 that Jessops and Warehouse Express wanted for body only.

EDIT: Invoice dropped onto the mat 16th October - puts price up to £ 809.

I dont see anything wrong withe 40D ISO performance or is it cos I have upgraded from the 400d?

I could not justify to pay for the 50D then again I dont have the type of money like some of you have ;)

There isn't anything wrong with the 40D's ISO performance.

Nikon have raised the bar quite a bit over the past 12 months and Canon have responded. Technology marches onwards and things improve (generally and hopefully) but the improved ISO performance is a bonus a small percentage of shots unless fast or dark is your thing.

The 1.0.2 update doesnt appear to be available online yet !

Seems you're right....I've just trawled through various Canon sites and found nothing. A poll on POTN indicates that around twice as many people have 1.0.1 than 1.0.2 (only 33 respondants so far).
