Grendel wins!!!

Get the battery charged and sort out some settings while you are at work then it will be ready for you to use tonight when you get home!!

I find hat new toys can give a bad headache within an hour if they are not properly taken out and used so on health grounds an early finish is in order

Like your thinking Susie!

no test shots yet - its 17.05!

pmsl  :D

Give me a chance, I haven't left work yet :p :(

Could one of you lucky people with a new 50D tell me if its raw files can be opened by CS3, or do we have to get the new CS4? Thanks.

I *believe* that ACR 4.6 plug in for CS3, supports the 50D but can only be downloaded from Adobe Labs as it's still in beta.

LINKY

I will probably be trying it out myself tonight so I'll let you know for sure as soon as I know :)

Thanks Grendel, I do not want to splash out on a 50D if I have to get CS4 as well. (Yes I know there are other raw converters, but I get on well with the intergrated adobe one in CS3!)
Incidentely, has the Digital rev price gone up? I can only find it at £955?

Hmmm it seems to have done :( I definitely only paid £847 for mine but can now only see it at £955 on their site today :nono: Maybe the price I paid was an error  I'm bleedin' lucky if it was :)

Yours arrived quickly Grendel, hopefully mine will follow suit!

BTW, do they actually ship from HK or do they have stock in this country? And I paid £847 too :)

Definitely shipped from HK :)

erm example shots please!
all ISO ranges etc...

posted in about three other places, but once more for luck :)

(am going to go down to the woods tomorrow to take some 'real' shots).

I still have my 40D until I sell it, but didn't do direct comparisons to 40D. I was more interested to see what was usable and what wasn't. These are all out of camera JPG, standard style, NR set to 'standard'. Tripod, MLU. Canon 24-105 set to f4. Light was low, indoors at ISO 200 and f4 I was getting 1/13 second.

personally I'm very happy with 3200. Bear in mind these are 100% crops so not a realistic setting for eg a print. (there is a full shot at the bottom of the post if you want to check it out at different sizes)

Overall picture for reference:

100% crops at

ISO 200

ISO 1600

ISO 3200

ISO 6400

ISO 12800

Here's a link to the fullsized toys shot at ISO 3200

and some of a focus target thingy from a magazine I shot too in case it helps show detail Vs noise?

I'm trying to convince DHL to leave mine at the Norwich depot which is about 1 1/2 miles from my house rather than taking it back to the International Hub which is at Cambridge - a good 2 1/2 hour round trip away (assuming I want to collect it)

Well looking at those pics, I see a clear two stops improvement in noise compared to the 40D. I use the 40D at 800 ISO a lot, but rarely any faster if I can help it.

Looks good.

same here. I used to go to 800 but no higher. I'd happily use 3200 on the 50D. Needs some more testing but I'm pretty happy so far. And 100% isn't realistic anyway - 6400 might be usable with a little post processing on print sizes - don't usually print higher than 8x10s anyway for normal shots.

 Nice one Andrew :)

Mine is here, haven't used it yet though. Got mine from digital rev and was rather surprised and excited to see it come in a "with kit lens" box even though I hadn't paid for it. There was no kit lens though. I'll have to make do with the 300mm F2.8 that I ordered with it thats sat at the DHL facility at the East Midlands Airport.

was really hoping to get an English manual with it, but as most is the same as 40D I guess I'll cope

I had the same problem Andrew. I've bought from Digital Rev before and always had English manuals so I sent them an email and they replied saying they were sorry, it was a mistake to have sent Chinese manuals. They promised to send English versions by Airmail straight away.

Same here Grendel. It's a fascinating language but I'll be buggered if I can make head nor tail of it. I've contacted them too so hopefully they'll oblige seeing as they've had £2500 of my hard earned money this week!

There's a copy posted here to get you going http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/1/0300001591/01/eos50d-h-en.pdf

Thanks Bob & Andrew

According to Digital Rev there has been a shortage of English manuals. That seems to be true as I spoke to Robert Scott who also said they are having difficulty in getting English manuals for the 50D atm
