50D Announced

you better or else!

Am I the only one that thinks that even these reduced prices are too dear considering that the 40D was about £800?

The Jessops price is an absolute scandal.

good thing they price match!

RGB Tech are already advertising at £899 which, imo, is the area the online price is more likely to be, once stocks start rolling in. I doubt it'll be long before the price drops a bit below that too.

But yeah, the Jessops price is just silly, and so is any one who pays it!

I'm tempted by the play.com link because I've bought from them before and am happy to do so again. Would it be fair to say that even their price will drop a few weeks after release?

I would expect it too, seeing as Play are usually pretty competitive. Personally I'm almost certainly going to buy from RGB as their price is the best I've seen, they're supposedly getting stock on Monday and I can't bleedin' wait for this camera any longer! I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas lol :help:

Plus, CT won't forgive me if I say I've delayed my purchase

only thing i noticed on the Play site is this "Due for release on 03/10/2008"
I saw that too.

RGB are going to be inundated with orders though and they'll never match the demand seeing as they seem like a small outfit so I'd imagine that there will be people waiting well into October with them too.

Jessops say they have stock in now. So in theory some people may have it tomorrow if they paid the £15 for saturday delivery!

Its disappointing how many shops are charging £1200 for this body only, presumably in an attempt to fleece the early adopter. May go with RGB-tech to try them out. If they're a genuinely decent shop then more the better. Just a shame they're up there and I'm down here. Bristol Cameras is just down the road but they want £1200 now...

Not if you put yourself on their list to be contacted as soon as they have the 50D in stock :D

Hi,
I'm off to Japan in a few weeks and I'm going to by myself a 50D (only £650.00 for the body). However, accessories seem to be cheaper here so I want to get a remote release here. I was wondering if a 40D-compatible release will also work with the 50D. I gather that the battery is the 511-A.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

The existing XXD cable release will still be compatible with the 50D

From this preview...

The Canon 50D will accept virtually all EOS 40D accessories, including the battery grip, remote control, optional focusing screens, and battery. The existing Canon 40D model will remain in the line through the end of 2008, with a price drop to $1,099 body-only.

The Jessops price is an absolute scandal.

The 50D is designed to slot slightly above the 40D and the two ranges will run concurrently, so the slightly higher price point from places like RGB seems reasonable.

Someone at Jessops must have a herd of Giraffes with their launch price.

the 50D is not to replace the 40D, it's to sit between the 40 and 5D mk2 so it's priced about right (at £899 anyway (RGB price)).

To all others, i can vouch for RGB, iuse them regularly in person, i'm lucky in the fact i live about 4 miles away from the shop and it's a well organised outfit and it's not a small time outfit as someone said.

Well i popped into RGB yesterday, put my name down for it, i'm 25th in the queue, they don't do buy now pay later though so if i do get it from there i have to trade in my 100-400 for it, which if needs be, i don't mind, they said i'll only have to put another £100 to the camera but then on the bright side, it's one less debt to worry about, however, i went into Jessops and asked if they would price match RGB because it's only next door but 2 to RGB, the manager couldn't believe how cheap RGB were but said he would try to match it for me when they have in stock, this way i get to keep the 100-400 for a year then sell it in 12 months (which i'd prefer), so either way, i'm getting the 50D, it's just a matter of when either have them in stock, could be a few weeks yet in reality.

Hope so, I'll be looking for one around Feb/March, whant to see initial results first.

[PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER]!

I hope Jessops have them in stock tomorrow, as i'll be bringing mine home, with a 580EXII tomorrow :D, if they don't, i'll just have to settle with a new iphone :D

going to be down in Bristol tomorrow on work, which seems to have more than its fair share of camera shops :) Any idea if one will have stock at reasonable (i.e <£1000 ) prices?

Off the top of my head they have bristol cameras, jacobs, jessops, ace and two london camera exchanges. Have I missed one?

I'd be surprised if you find one I'm afraid :(. The only retailer that I know of at the moment who is showing stock is Jessops, and they are selling for £1200

I've had a change of plan, i think the sensible side of me wants to hang on a couple of months to see if prices drop a bit, also, i may even consider a 5D mk2 now after seeing video footage.

got one from LCE in baldwin street. Haggled them down to £949 body only based on the price that Jessops New Oxford Street apparantly did them for. They still have one 17-85 kit available.

Now need to swap it over so the wife doesn't notice. Good thing they're practically identical :D

Your wife looks like a 50D?

:coat:

So is mine. Paypal is generously picking up £ 100 using their 20% off / £ 100 coupon, another £ 200 is from print sales in my paypal account, so the credit card is only getting hit with £ 450 which is what Redline mag owe me for published work.

Looks like Grendel could win this race then  Hope they arrive in time for the weekend for you although that will be pushing things a bit for customs!!
