Thanks for that Organics. That's the first one I've seen advertised below the RRP. That gives a pretty good idea of where the real price is likely to be :)
 
Not a problem Grendal. CT is correct as its not available for pre-order and I guess we're looking at a October availability... Plenty of time to see if the 5D MKII makes an appearence.
 
Ive just seen that Bristol Cameras are now advertising the 50D for £949 and are taking pre orders. First stock expected October :)
 
Is this a very good upgrade over the 30D then? I held off the 40D because i'm not bothered about the Live view, but the 50D looks quite good with 15mp sensor, DIGIC4 processor, 6.3fps. Anything else i've missed as i've only flicked through the specs?

I think only you can decide if it is a good upgrade for you.

don't know if this has been posted already but there is a video on Youtube HERE which has been done by the same person ( I think ) that CT posted the review from earlier in this thread.

50D looks very tasty indeed.

I doubt it - this guy is a well respected wildlife tog, so he'd be a fool to make claims for the 50D he can't support. When I swapped from the 20D to the 40D the leap in image quality with the extra 2 mp was really significant. The 50D gives a 5 mp increase yet again on the 40D! This camera is Canon's response to the Nikon challenge with their newer models - they'd be mugs if it doesn't cut the mustard.

The proof of the pudding will be in the eating, but anyone who uses long lenses for wildlife is going to see a massive increase in image quality and reach, especially for those long range birds.

arghhhh STOP IT, must not buy, must not buy :bang: :gag: I vowed I would never buy a new body again with so much depreciation on them in a very short time, I don't suppose it will be too long before used ones appear on the market, probably/hopefully after Xmas :thumbs: Only problem being that this might drive down the used 1D prices and I will have one to get rid of.

I know exactly where you're coming from Mike, but the depreciation on 1 Series bodies is huge compared to the XXD range, and that's exactly why I've opted out of that silly upgrade game. You just need to make sure that the sensor size you choose is the best one for the bulk of the togging you do and that you're forking out 1 Series money for the right reasons.

The jaw dropping 22mp of the 1DS MK3 is shortly to be eclipsed by Nikon and Sony who both have 25 megapixel full frame sensors waiting in the wings, and so it will go on... many people think we're going to see 50mp sensors in the next few years. If you're into landsape, weddings, studio work etc, the advantages of full frame and all those pixels are pretty obvious, but they'll all disappoint behind a long lens compared to the 50D and it's crop sensor.

at least I bought my 1D Mark II second hand so won't really lose anything on it really so the 50D would be an easy purchase with not a lot to add to the cash price, not only does the 1.6x draw me to it but the 15mp for cropping should look pretty good, ok as you know I love my 1D for the handling and speed but the 1.3x does hamper it a wee bit, especially for wildlife, however the main problem for me is the non function of the AF on my Sigma 500mm lens with a TC on this body at least I 'should' get that back with the 50D.

The one thing I would miss, would be the handling of the 1D, ok it's weighty but it just feels SO right in your hand and the strength of the body for me is a plus as well as I do mostly wildlife shooting as you know and the weather sealing is useful, especially this 'summer'

If I am to seriously consider the 50D then it will be before xmas to improve my chances of selling the 1D Mark II, although the market might be swamped with them by that time, ideally I'd keep both but financially I can't.

Err whats that due to? The 1d will AF to F8 on the centre focus point, the 50D will be just f5.6. Likely as not the 50D will in no way fix this problem...

Hi,

Firmware update removed the ability of this lens to AF on a 1D series camera. It seemingly worked with version 1.0.0 of the firmware but the next update knocked it out. You're right about the 50D not helping I forgot this lens goes to 6.3 with the TC fitted, oh well never mind, although I would gain most of what was lost going to the 1d at 1.3x as the 50D will give me .3 back again with it being 1.6x.

I was using a Sigma 500mm f4.5 plus tc on a 1d mk2 running latest firmware in a shop last week, worked ok.:shrug:

Hi,

is that so, I'd be really interested to know which TC and which version of the firmware it was on the Mark II, it might just mean the Siggy needs rechipping/programmed at Sigma to work properly, but at least you have see it work.

they are VERY good, local to me, i've used them a good few times, they even offered to get me a sigma 120-300 F/2.8 just so i could try it. Unfortunately, they don't do interest free credit, so i usually go to Jessops which is 2 doors down the road and get them to price match and get the IFC :D

So on friday i intend on going to Jessops and getting them to pricematch the 50D for £899

On a serious note, the staff at RGB are well clued up, i see a lot of 'high end' users shopping in there buying expensive lenses etc so yes, they are reputable in my eyes :)

well, after the disappointing spec and price of the 5d mk2 i'm definitely getting the 50D, i've also decided to keep my 30D for now, going to keep the 10/20 or 24-105 on the 30 and 100-400 on the 50 for stuff like BTCC etc. I'll probably go and buy it on Monday so i'll try and set up a comparison between my 30 and 50. can't wait now hehe :D
 
lol looks like we're going to end up with pretty much the same set up then Wez ;)
 
hehe yeh, i've decided to keep my 100-400 too and go to Tebay for some LFA action at some point hehe.
 
i am starting to do some over time so in a couple of months i should have enough to buy the 50D which i will beleive to be a massive improvement over my curent 400D!
mostly looking forward to less noise at high ISO's, improved AF etc...
