Hello to you all hope you are well.

I have the 500D which is ace for me as I am learning. I'm very impressed with it and have just signed up to start a NCFE lvl 1 course in September.

I am trying to understand the differences between the models as knowing me I will want to upgrade at some point (no rush).

What are the benefits of the above makes? Could someone explain in layman terms to me??

My brother in law has a 30D and said I should have gone for a similar one, but from what I have read my camera will stack up ok against his (as his is older).

Should I upgrade going forward what is the benefit of full frame vs not full frame? If I read things correctly none of the above canons are full frame as they can accept EF and EFS lenses??

Am I on the correct path, or have I missed the ball completely.

Mainly nature (flowers and macro etc) and pictures of my children.

The 500D is more than adequate for my purposes currently, I'm just trying to establish the main differences and benefits of the cameras as there are so many.

I assume that the 5Ds and 1Ds are the pro cameras given the massive increase in price, are these the full frame ones?

What do you get if you upgrade?
...Bigger body
...Better build quality (especially the 7D)
...Bigger pixel count (but you already have plenty)
...Articulated LCD (60D)
...Better AF (7D)
...Faster frame rate (and even faster with the 7D)
...and various other bits and pieces

....but not necessarily better photos. Really, if you're not hitting the limitations of your current equipment, then there will be no benefit to upgrading. If and when you start to feel those limitations, you'll have some useful pointers towards the upgrade.

Maybe a little, I just took a quick look at your camera gear in your profile and although there is nothing wrong with the lenses you currently have there is nothing there that could be improved by spending more money on a body. In essence the camera is just a tool for capturing the image and given the high levels of tech that goes into any decent SLR these days they are all more than up to the job of producing pretty damned big quality prints. I have owned a 500d and now own a 60d and have used a 7d and I can tell you now that with your current lenses you will see no difference in your shots taken on any of those bodies.
Given the subject matter you say you use your current line up for, then the 7d is a waste of money for you unless you plan on shooting a lot of fast moving subjects e.g. Motorsport,athletics etc. The only thing I could see that would maybe ( and just maybe) help would be an articulated screen for your macro work (600d. 60d) otherwise spend the money better lenses, that is where you will really see a big payoff.
You love to photograph your family ? Who doesn't, so get a fast standard zoom like the 17-55 f2.8 , you will see immediately the difference in sharpness as well and fast glass is a revelation ( apart from the faster shutter speeds you can use) and the view through the viewfinder will be so much brighter and clearer than your 18-55 you will think you HAVE bought a new body. If you don't use your 75-300 much then instead of replacing that why not get a good macro lens? A used Tamron 90mm can be had fairly cheaply and it's a belter for the money.
