Hi Guys,

im very new to photography

I just got myself nikkon 55-300 f/4.5-5.6G for my D5100. I have been only training using 18-55 mm for the last 6 months and currently on my new zoom lens I'm experiencing alot of lens shake than I used to on my stock lens. Also images seemed less sharper than my stock 18-55.
Is this because im still not used to the new weight of the zoom lens?
Also is it practical going for higher ISOs like 1600 or 3200 inorder for faster shutter speeds?
Also I love shooting on the lowest f number to get a shallow depth of field. But alot of articles suggest shoot at f8 for my lens as it is the SWEET SPOT. Is this correct?

Welcome to TP.

I can't comment on your particular lens and camera but yes a larger, heavier and differently balanced camera/lens combination will take a little time to get used to.

A guide for shutter speed is that to prevent (or at least reduce) camera shake it should be at least the reciprocal of the focal length of the lens.

A 50mm lens needs a shutter speed of at least 1/50s, a 300mm needs at least 1/300s, etc. It is sometimes said this calculation should also use the crop factor of the camera, so with your D5100 the minimum for a 300mm lens would be 1/450s. This is only a guide, some people have steadier hands than others and having some support will also help, but it is a reasonable place to start.

You said that you like to use small apertures which will make the problem worse because of the longer shutter speeds.
