5 year old 100-400mm lens

I would imagine that if it has been well looked after, there will be no problem at all. Lenses usually can go on for years and years without any servicing at all, especially if they don't have internal AF motors. Nikon AF-D in particular, can be trouble free indefinitely.

I've got the 35-350L here...the forerunner to the 100-400. It's a 1994 vintage and still going strong so you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

thats nice to know, i didnt even notice that the questions about it being 5 years old. Have been looking at the 100-400 L for a few days now and seen it brand new for about 850 sort of region. paid £640 including p+p, which aint a great saving saying it is 5 years old.

Provided it's been looked after then the age isn't really an issue.....£640 is a good price IMO.

Actually, providing it was as described on the ebay listing (eg they say it works), you aren't covered at all... its not like buying a new item!

Anything NOT stated you won't be covered for... eg they don't say its been painted purple, but it has...
