I had a 484RC2 then upgraded to the 486RC2 when I got my 300mm f2.8 and it was sooooo much better, so I guess the 488 will be even better, never used a 808 so can't comment.

I have the 488RC4 head and I couldn't be more pleased with it. Can't compare I'm afraid as it's the only one I've ever had.
Some may not be happy with the plate size though as when on the camera it is larger than the camera base and so sticks out slightly. I dont find this a problem as it give a larger flat base to the camera. I have a Nikon D80 by the way.
