Hi,

I'm going to buy a camera in the next few days and would like a little help deciding which to go for.

I have some John Lewis vouchers and here are the following prices in store -

450D - £469 (Then £30 cashback on top)
500D - £579 (Then £50 cachback on top)

Is the 500D really woth £90 more than the 450D, bearing in mibd this is my first DSLR?

Please help :bang:

Thanks!

Nick.

Personally, I'd go for the 450 and if you have some budget left put it towards something else you might benefit from. A good tutorial book, a tripod, a second lens, etc. Learn to use the camera and you'll have fun and enjoy your results.

Hi Nick,

I had the same dilemma as you a couple of months ago. I chose the 450d simply because i didn't feel that i needed the video facility the 500d has.

I am sure some of the guys and gals on here will have good information for you regarding their views from a more technical perspective but that was my reasoning and i have had no reason to regret my choice!

Best wishes,

Tracey

The 450D is a fine camera for the money and as a first DSLR a great choice. The 500D has video recording but would you use it?

I bought the 450D as I didn't need the video function of the 500D.

If video is important you will want the 500D

Cheers

MIP

Is there much difference between the picture quality of the 2?

Nope it's all about the lens in front and the person pressing the shutter button ;)

I'd go for the 450D over the 500D if you don't need / want the video function.

If you quick, and John Lewis normally do, get them to price match to Comet, they are currently offering the 450D with 18-55IS lens at £422

Good luck

Thanks for the info ;)

Jost spoke to JL and Comet. It's classed as an internet offer as I have to reserve it online then collect instore. JL therefore won't match the price! Only £20 difference really as the Comet offer doesn't incluse the £30 cashback where as the JL camera does. Nevermind!

If there's not much difference between the 2 apart from the Video I might as well put that £90 towards some accessories!

Does the 3m MP difference make a difference to quality or not?

Thanks,

Nick :)

500D if only for the superb screen, so much nicer and why not have the video function too, might want it one day

Also has better high ISO performance and the extra mp's are nice to have for cropping.

Ive got the 450d, I don't think your getting that much more with the 500d.
Buy some accessories with the rest of the money.

What type of photography are you going to shoot? I would put the 90quid into your next lends fund, as it is an addictive hobby.

You won't notice any difference in real terms. Pixels are only part of the story.

What lens comes with it?

As a first DSLR the 450D will more than deliver.

Whilst you can argue that the 500 is a better camera, to an extent that is semantics as Freester says, it'll be about you taking the pics not the camera and the 450 has enough functionality and quality to more than do you justice!

Using the money saved to buy a tripod / bag / memory cards will allow you to enjoy your camera more!

Sorry to mention it again, but if you use live view or review your pics that screen makes all the difference
Have a look at them both turned on and see what you think

Not too sure TBH! A bit of everything really! Although looking at Macro photos, I'll definitely have to invest in a macro filter/lens!!!

I'd go for 500D (or if they still have 40D then definitely get that). Nikon D90 would be another better choice if it doesn't have to be Canon for whatever reason.

Between 2 rebels, I'd definitely have 720p video and a decent screen for £90. £90 won't buy you much in terms of lenses. Even if you only use video a couple times a year it may still be very nice, I'd love to have it just in case. I can't really agree with the stubborn view that if you don't currently use you don't need it. And 500D is not perfect for video, but should easily beat any cheap consumer camcorder.

Personally I would (did) opt for the 450D.

I don't know if you have anything else to spend the John Lewis vouchers on (a new freezer Mmm :p).

I just say this because if you look around on eBay or whatever you can pick-up 450/500D's for a lot less than you might expect. Don't go for the sellers who offer 89'000'000 accesories with the camera, but ones that sell the UK version, that way you get a full warranty. I picked-up my 450D for £350 body only. Then put £225 towards a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens secondhand.

http://www.camerasim.com/ - Use this to get to understand 'exposure' and how to use the camera - you see the importance of the f2.8 aperture especially if you plan to use the lens indoors.

So to summarise to start I would -450D body from eBay, 17-50mm used and get yourself new curtains for the living room :D

Hi,
I have both... I bought the 450d thinking I wouldn't see any difference in the spec that I thought I would get anything from. Then as I want to do weddings I needed a second body. So to keep the lens's usable I went for the 500d.
I have to say the 500d is a lot better than the 450d, surprisingly so. And I don't even use the video function.
Given the choice... 500d for me :)

Higher ISO is another useful thing - pretty noisy, but useable. And as others have said, the big high res screen is a bonus for reviewing yout shots or checking focus using Live view. Video is pretty good as well, though I haven't used it very much yet - file sizes are massive !

i went through the same dilemma a couple of months ago and settled for the 500D

Another bit of advice that might help you decide.

You can read what you like and look at all the pretty pictures you like but onew thing that is missing. Touch feel and what floats your boat.

Go to the store and get both on the counter and look at them touch them and decide on what you will be doing with it.

Like said £90 will not buy you a decent lens, but it will buy a decent memery card and a bag to keep it in (ok not the best bag in the world but you are just starting out so can upgrade later).

This hobby is VERY adictive and you WILL buy more later.

You have all the info here now its down to personal choice.

Good luck with what ever you decide, and keep coming here and asking questions no matter how silly they may seem and you will get a whole host of good advice, oh yes and post some pics, that will make you better too.

£90 can buy too many of these... A decent 8GB memory card is under £20 (he really doesn't need Extreme XXX), and GEM backpack I bought new on ebay store for £34 is really excellent, but possibly even that is too much just for a basic rebel kit. You could probably get Versace branded one if you really need to flush your money.

It is important to be comfortable with the camera. Rebels felt horrible in my large hands, so 30D was then the only sensible choice at the time (or D300 which was far more sensible :bonk:)

I was also in the same situation and went for the 450D. With the money i saved i bought a tripod, memory card, Lowepro camera bag and still had some change to put to a new lens. I'd make the same choice again.

Hope I helped a bit :)

also remember that the 500D will have the ugly cosmetics with microphones built in etc. get a 450D and put the rest towards a nice 50mm lens, tripod, bag, and possibly a book. also look on youtube for tutorials and stuff with your camera as the show you things like changing certain settings that you may not have known about.

It has 4 tiny holes for the mic... hardly ugly cosmetics
Read the reviews for both.
