(Originally had this post in equipment thread - sorry!)

Looking at purchasing some flash units for my Canon 450d.
The YN-460 Speedlight seems to be a good start for the price and able to vary the power output level.

I have also found a couple of old flash units off older SLRs and I'm wondering if they are compatible with the 450d?

They are a PRAKTICA 1600A and a SUNTAX 9000.

I read that you could damage your camera if the power to fire the flashes wasn't correct on the hot-shoe. Would these units be okay to use without any damage?
If used by a remote trigger could they be used as a second unit with the Speedlite?
Any advice most welcome!
Thanks

OK found this and if your model is the 9000ML then you should be fine as the trigger voltage is 3.6v-3.8v

http://www.suntax.com.sg/Manual9000ML.html

There is also a 9000ETS which they say has safer low trigger voltage but they don't specify exactly how low (probably the same as the 9000ML)

Oh and for off camera or slave use with a remote trigger the voltage is irrelevant since there is no direct/cable contact with the hotshoe.

As for the Yongnuo 460 you would be better spending a little more and getting the YN-467 i-TTL or YN-468 TTL which have TTL functionality with the canons and a built in slave trigger.

Sorry, that's incorrect, the majority of the triggers on the market, such as the RF-602 and the PT-04 have a max trigger voltage of 12v, anything over that will fry them....

Excellent info I wasn't aware of that, you live and learn.

You're welcome, I think Darren (Cowasaki) posted a tutorial on how to repair a burned-out RF602 receiver if anyone wants to see what happens when you run 300v or so through one

Phew! Quite a lot to take in it seems!
Thought most flashes used about the same power if they had hot-shoe connector and internal batteries...obviously not!?

I really just wanted a simple-ish set up of maybe two off camera flash units fired by 'Remote Radio Wireless Flash Trigger+2 Receiver'
I thought the Remote YN-460 Speedlite would be a good & cheap start out and was hoping one or both the flash units I mentioned would be compatible with it.

BTW...The SUNTAX 9000 has 'Quick' under Suntax 9000 (no other words) if that helps in saying that flash is usable?

Thanks for your input, Gary & Graham.
Any more info/advice on my set-up request would be most welcome!
Cheers!

Ok I did a little more digging and the newer Suntax flashes with the T designation (T for Thyristor, makes sense now, though the 9000ML doesnt yet they say it's safe which is why good research pays off ) in there model number are Digital Camera safe. The 9000 Quick is 16 years olds has a high trigger voltage and is definitely NOT safe on digital cameras. Looks like you will have to buy another flash :'(

Thanks Gary. Looks like I'll be shelling out!!!

If you don't mind me asking...
Would getting two YN-460's as opposed to one YN-467 i-TTL or YN-468 TTL
be a better set up for the price? The YN-460 being half the price of the others.
Would they work with the 'Remote Radio Wireless Flash Trigger+2 Receiver' that can be bought on ebay

They will work perfectly but whether on or off camera the exposure settings will be fully manual which will require a little experimentation each time you use them in varying light conditions. If you plan on always using the two off camera then it is of no consequence really as manual adjustments would be needed anyway. This of course is the way we older photography enthusiasts always did it (and probably learned more about lighting as a result) and we have just become a little lazier with new technologies but nothing wrong with that either.
