Yes
I have just ordered a 50d to replace my 450d. I read many reviews pitting the 50d against the 40d with limited success. I guess my muse is whether I will notice a difference in my upgrade?

Look forward to your comments.

Will you notice a difference? Depends on why you're upgrading. What do you think you'll be able to do with the 50D that you couldn't do with the 450D?

I have poured over these already, believe me!! What I can't find anywhere is much of a comparison from the 450d.

Stewart - I found the 450d rather limiting in lower light wildlife photography. I like being able to view and zoom in on the LCD, so that kind of swung it for me from the 40d. I'm not expecting my photos to suddenly be good, but I am hoping that they will be clearer.

Why is the 450d limiting in low light?

You can zoom in on the 40d if its for focus purposes

I have found that I often am having to use 800 iso, so this was a big consideration for me with the 50d. Also I am looking at trying to keep a fast shutter speed as my lens is just too damn heavy!!

Too late now if I've made the wrong choice!!!!

ok so just to clarify you are using a heavy lens in low light cranking up the iso to reduce blurring and i guess freezing the action and this is all hand held?

a cheaper option would be a monopod. £50 for half decent one copare to a camera that is £850+

sorry if this seems a bit of a harsh post but thats what i gathered from your posts. However will gracefully retract if i am overlooking something.

I guess that you've just about hit the nail on the head - And I've already got a tripod. Maybe I should move this is the other thread I've seen about always wanting something more!!

Not harsh at all - Just from reading the posts doesn't give you an idea about how I like buying stuff!!

So can you enlighten me when you use ISO800 on the 450d how this will change when you get you 50d

OMG - Seem to be getting a bit of a doing over with this thread :)

I believe that I will get less noise and better quality from the 50d at ISO800than my 450d at the same ISO.

LOL not at all, just trying to get your points.

You will get less noise, although what are your lenses

The lens I will be predominantly using will be my 100-400.

I see some of the most fantastic wildlife pics with great detail, that I just felt I wasn't quite getting these. Probably more down to me, but a bad workman blames their tools!!

I really was going to go for the 40d instead, but a bonus from work and selling the 450d, the 50d has cost me about £250!

i think i'd have been supporting the lens in someway rather than handheld or buying a prime

Maybe a carbon fibre tripod and a manfrotto 393 head

You could send back the camera within the store refundable time or if you like buying stuff you could always purchase something for me ....

I'm actually on the same shoes more or less with you. I've had my 400D since the day it came out in stores, and I was always a firm believer of good lenses instead of the body, that's why i invested a lot of money on good glass. But the noise control of the XXXD bodies isn't up for it when it comes to wildlife. I too have to use ISO800 for bird photography, and I rarely do it. I prefer the hit and miss of slower shutterspeeds at ISO400 than the amount of noise I get from higher ISOs. In that respect, the consencus is that the XXD range is definitely better in higher ISO-less noise. What I'm not sure though is whether to go for the 40D or the 50D. I've read the article on dpreview about the 50D and it said that the 40D has less noise than the 50D, due to the pixel density. But, having the possibility to crop your photos from a 15MP one is a great advantage for better reach for those small timid birds.

I think you'll definitely see a great improvement when it comes to ISO, so I think you made a great choise.

Meant to say

Or buying a prime would be a better option.

if the credit crunch is a consideration then I reckon you can't go wrong with the 40d. CT takes some great pics with his. For me, I know my failings, if I bought a 40d I'd want a 50d!!

I guess why I began this was to try to understand the difference between the 450 and 50d. The reviews all concentrate on the upgrade from 40 to 50d.

I look forward to knowing the decision you make.
