This week the challenge is...

Contrasts

Flora, fauna, people, buildings, still life, abstracts or any shot which conveys a “contrast” as you perceive it – whether that be colours, tones, lighting, objects, concepts or any other interpretation of the theme that you'd like - whatever takes your fancy.

Remember the competition is open to EVERYBODY and hopefully the theme's broad enough to allow something for everyone. :)

All the usual rules apply:

All entries must be new photos, taken within the time frame of the comp so please leave exif intact.

Maximum of 3 entries per person.

Limited PP, cropping, exposure control, sharpening etc is okay, multi layered cut and pasting is not.

The winner chooses the theme for the following challenge.

Entries can be posted from 8pm on Thursday 26th November until 9pm on 29th November, with the winner announced later that evening.

Winner runs the competition for the following week.

Good luck everyone, let's see if we can keep the numbers up this week!

do i have to wait till thursday? lol

Yes

I questioned this when I entered for the first time. The reason behind the rule is to give people time to think about their entry without being influenced by other people's shots.

There's nothing stopping you getting your shot ready now - just don't post it until Thursday night ;)

If you're not going to be around later in the week and you've got your shot ready, PM me with the links to the image and I'll put it up here for you on Thursday evening :)

I have one pic sorted ready to post and doing my other two by friday as im back on on shift saturday.

I just get to excited :-) lol

OK, I've had a bash on the theme of contrasting colours and ripeness! All shot on top of kitchen hob :)

Cropped, levels and sharpened only.

Quite enjoyed the m&m's!

glad people are still posting I like doing these lol

Well done everyone. It's great to see a few more people entering these again and I'm amazed at the quality of the shots - I'm glad that I wasn't entering this week

On the downside, it's not making my job of picking a winner any easier :gag:

I'm going to go and have a think about it and I'll post the results up soon :)

Grrrrrrr . . . this has been a touch one to call. But having enlisted a second opinion from my OH I've finally decided.

So in reverse order we have :

In Runners-Up position.
Shoshone with the calm harbour vs rough sea.
Great interpretation of the theme and a very nice composition with the curve of the harbour drawing your eye into the shot. Good capture of the wave in motion too
I would maybe have liked a slightly lower pov to give a bit more impact and some more contrast in the sky but a very good entry all the same.

2nd Place

OK, this is a bit of a cop out, but I really couldn't decide between these two. They're two such different shots and I like them both for totally different reasons . . . so I'm calling a joint 2nd place.

Alison's Age & Youth :
Another great interpretation of the theme and a beautiful sensitive photograph.
Good lighting and I love the facial expressions that you've caught - there's a real sense of connection between the two of them and they're so naturally posed. It's as if they don't know that the camera's there.
A minor niggle for me is the groom's button hole being partially cropped off. I would have preferred it either all in frame or all out.
I still love this though and I bet the happy couple will love to see it.

and

Barney's M&Ms :
My type of shot.
I love the simplicity of it, very nicely focussed and great colours.
It's beautifully sharp and the reflection has come out perfectly.
Then the green in the border just finishes it off brilliantly IMO

And in 1st Place

Robbo's Flour Bomb.
Technically, I think this must have been a really tricky shot but you've managed it very well.
The exposure of the white flour and black background are both spot on and you've timed the explosion to perfection.
I think maybe you could have done with a slightly wider angle to give a bit more space around it, but I loved this shot as soon as I saw it

Must have been hell of a mess to clean up afterwards though. I bet Mrs Robbo wasn't too pleased with you.

Well done to everyone once again. It's great to see this competition starting to get popular again. I've had some real fun with it.

Over to Robbo now for next week :)

Smashin, thanks SarahLee, well chuffed! Oh and they're Skittles not M&M's  My Candy knowledge is a little lacking but SWMBO put me right!

P.S. Loving your self portrait pictures in your 52's thread!

Barney

Ooops! I bet you were popular after that

I'm not sure if there is a list of themes. I haven't seen one
It'd be a good idea to start one from this week though. Maybe something everyone can copy and paste into the new threads.

maybe we could get a sticky for it? and then change the title for next years etc........

which mod can we ask?

Probably easiest to set up a new thread titled something like "Challenge for the days ahead - themes so far" and then asking in forum discussion for it to be stickied.

I think the mods are pretty busy on here, so a request in forum discussion may be the best place for them all to see it.

okay doky, i have posted the new topic......

will post up in discussion now to.

I really enjoyed looking at all the entries and cheers for joint second Sarah :). I found the crit very constructive and useful too.

The flour bomb shot is brilliant Robbo but you've still not told us how long it took to clear the mess up. Is that because Mrs R has locked you in the shed?
