Yes
I'm gonna be needing a flashgun soon, I was wondering what the actual difference was between the 2 aside from build (metal shoe etc).

If I'm only going to be using it for occasional mounting for photoshoots and fill light situations, would I need a couple of 430ex's or should I just buy a couple of the jessops ones? I suppose my needs come down to different levels of light, as opposed to just one big source, E-TTL is a must and slave modes.

I know it'll sound odd, but if you could ask me questions as to what I'd be using it for I suppose it would help us all understand what it is I'm after?

I'm confused!

Help!

If the build quality is good enough and the guide number high enough, get the cheaper lights.

Jessops 360 is a popular gun and good value, but not comparable to the Canon 430. Good as a second gun for strobisty stuff, but I always say get at least one really good gun as your main flash.

In particular, the Jessops is down on power, doesn't have a high speed sync mode (useful for fill-in outdoors) and the built-in slave is basic manual/optical only and it won't do wireless auto-TTL (only on a cord).

For the slightly less than the 430 but more bang for your buck, I would also consider the Nissin Di866 Mark II, which is a great flash gun.

YN-565ex gets my vote tbh

The Jessops has the edge (assuming we're talking a new purchase) in that should a problem arise then getting it dealt with is a relatively pain-free experience.

Go for the cheapest option and buy a YN flash direct from HK, or even most UK Ebay sellers, and the hassle/cost involved in a warranty claim will negate any savings.

What kind of price are we talking direct from HK?

The only reason I ask is because I've decided to start using flashes for people work, so I'd like to be able to have nice control over my light

Ebay is your friend......

Holy C.. £99? Surely thats daylight robbery!?

no it's about the right price if it stops working after a year

I had the jessops gun too, but felt it underpowered, guide number is 36 compared to 43 (that means the distance it can illuminate to, in metres, so 43 is much more powerful, but 58 is even more powerful)
the jessops gun wouldn't play nice with a 1dmk3, but worked fine with a 550d- maybe something to do with the electronics

I use a 430ex, and i'm thinking of investing in a 580, I also have a 550ex but it's so clunky

Oh god.. I've got 4 to choose from now! :(

Would it be best to go for a 430exII and then a YN-565ex/Nissin as a secondary/slave?

the 430exII won't act as a master
so I have a 580exii and then the YN, just trying it out
works okay (but not as well as the 580) triggered by my ST-E2

I don't have enough for the 580exII, I wish I did..

I need one, maybe 2 flashes that are good for slaves and good for speed and power.. Is the 430exII and a Yongnuo or whichever a good idea?

i haven't had my jessops 360 for very long and the bit on the bottom has snapped in half (Cold Shoe?) I also have a friend whos has done the same thing. I also have a yn-460 II which doesn't have TTL so i always found better results from the jessops with the flash on board. Off camera in manual it's much better. I'll be upgrading to a 580ex II

Brilliant advice and feedback!

I think I'm gonna go for a Canon 430exII and then a Jessops Flash. Seeing as I can get staff discount, I don't think I'll be looking at too much of a bill. Especially considering I'm getting 2 flash guns!

Wireless triggers and accessories now :S

Mine snapped too. Found someone through Ebay who had just bought a damaged one and very kindly he sent me the part I needed to replace FOC.

yeah i found one on eBay that has a blown bulb, will be worth getting for the parts i need.

Sorry for the above link didn't notice they were used. I got mine from eBay for £40 from new. they don't seem to have any on there at the minute

That was a good price, wholesale they are well over £50 (+ vat) from Jessops

Woah!! That's a pretty awesome price, definitely gonna go for the 430exII and the jessops, the yongnuo just sounds like pain waiting to happen!

Are you using solely off cam? If so then manual flashes such as the Vivitar 285 are great. If you want Ttl you won't better the camera brand as they will work across all models whereas 3rd party Ttl flashes can have issues

Bit of both! It's for those reasons you stated that I'm going for the 430exII and the jessops!
