having just bought the 430 ex off Bo2007 i require a trigger to flash it remotely, what exactly do i need, i require the flash on my tripod and some way of triggering it, not connected if poss, the cheapest way.

Regards Mark.

either a set of ebay triggers or a cord. Using a cord will allow you to retain ttl metering, the wireless triggers mean using the flash in manual....

Hi thanks could you give me a link the the e-bay triggers, can not seam tio find them i may be going daft///strike that i am daft, i have a piece of paper to say i am sane, not many people have one of them:cuckoo::geek::thinking::naughty::bonk:

regards Mark:bonk:

From personal experience the cheap triggers do not work well with the 430ex or 580 ex no matter what the claims on ebay. I have tried three lots and none consitantly work. I would go with a cable, a canon ste2 or bite the bullet and get pocket wizards.

I've heard about "issues" with the 430ex, but wasn't sure if this was just people having the usual problems or if it was something else. A cord/cable is the most reliabe way to do it on a budget. The price of PWs just makes you want to cry

Takes a breath at these prices, i will be in the same room as the flash but need the ability to move with out wires, what is the item called that connect via a cord, and how cheap are they. it also mentions when setting ip the wireless that you plug in a jack to the flash ???? is this correct, i cannot see a jack point on my 430 ex or have i read thast wrong . this is the link

The problems are real, they triggers work great with my other flashes 540ez 430ez etc, its just the ex's that are problematic. Another way of doing it is to buy a cheap flash, get the triggers and buy an IR trigger hotshoe (about £9 from jessops) for the 480ex, then you have a two flash setup. Or you could use the onboard flash to trigger the 480 with the ir hotshoe, obviously this relies on the trigger being able to see the main flash.

Hi all after much research and how i will be using the trigger i went for gadget infinity hopefully not too many problems, i just need lighting from the side + it's very heavy and i can only lift the camera for a short time, this way everything should be back in balance, there have been some good reviews on this company and this wireless trigger, just wait and see now.

Thought i would dig this up.

I have a 430EX and wanted to trigger it was thinking either
Prolinca Infra-Red Trigger
or
Skyport but wasn't sure what would work with my 40D & 430EX

Last option was to buy a 580EX II.

I don't think the Prolinca would fire your 430EX at all
The skyport would allow you to run the flash in manual mode only

Your options are buy an ST-E2 or a 550, 580 or 580 II EX flashgun.
For the price of a 580 EXII I bet you could find an ST-E2 AND another 430EX

I would get a 580EX and use it as the main flash or to trigger your 430EX with the 580EX flash turned off. This is what I have done for now. I will look for another second hand 580EX as time goes on. more expensive than a ST-E2 but a more versatile combination.

pt-04 triggers work fine with my 430EXII for short ish distances, one really annoying feature is the dammed silly thing turns itself off after a minute or two but thats my biggest issue.

Think I'm gonna bite the bullet and get a 580 :) put some stuff on ebay to refill my bank when the 580 makes its dent.
