Now, I've had this on my mind for a few weeks. I'm pretty sure that I can't disable the flash on a 430EX MkI and just use the AF Assist on it, but I have a Stofen style diffuser which I got with the flash and I was thinking of blacking it out to prevent the flash light from having any effect on the picture. I thought about either a few thick coats of black paint both inside and outside, or perhaps even some black vinyl.

Obviously I'd power the flash down as much as possible which would help prevent light escaping as well as conserving battery power.

Does this sound feasible or is it just a crazy idea?

I don't think the custom function is available on the 400D.

AF-assist beam

This function has three settings. The default is emits – in low-light situations, the camera will emit a beam to assist the autofocus. Note that it’s not really a beam at all – it strobes the popup flash on the camera to assist with focusing (if it’s popped up). You can switch it off by setting this function to 1-Does not emit – you might like to do this if you don’t want the subject to e disturbed by the flash strobing until you’ve taken the picture. If you set this to 2:Only emits ext. flash, the camera will only use the AF assist beam built into dedicated Canon flash units.

Unfortunately none of those options disable the flash, they only affect whether the AF assist is off or AF assist is on camera or the external flash.

But if you select Does not emit your speedlite won't go off, just the AF assist.

This is how I get around it on my 30D, sure it would be the same on the 400?
