Could anyone tell me what lead i need to connect my flash gun to the 40D and to use the flash gun on a tripod and also do i need the 580 as a master unit and work the 430 as a slave.

Please Help:help:

you need the off camera shoe cord (OC-E3 i think it's called), and yes, you need a 580Ex as a master and either a 580Ex or a 430Ex as a slave.

With the 580Ex on camera, you can wirelessly control your other flashes so you won;t need a cord, unless its for the master flash.

Hi Wez,

Thanks for the info, iam useing the 430ex at the moment and not sure if i should buy a portable studio lighting setup or go for the 580 ex, i think the studio setup would be the better option, would do you think??

If it's going to be set in one place then i'd choose a studio, but with the 580Ex and 1 or 2 430Ex's you could set up a makeshift studio anywhere :)

you could always get a mobile studio lighting kit, from the likes of Bron. you can take it out on location or use it in the studio..... but i guess it depends what you're shooting as to whether its worthwhile? (also its not cheap)
I would like to do portraits, going round to peoples houses and the like to take the photo's there, and i suppose a mobile setup would do best.

Would i be wright in saying that the mobile setup will give me better results,

I have used mobile packs from Bron, and i have also used Prolites. They're a little bit different in the way they work, but both have given me good results. I have only ever shot with them using a 30d, but i'm looking forward to trying them with a full frame camera soon.

In my opinion the versatility of having a mobile setup with a couple of lights would be better for your needs than using an flash to bounce the light around.

Having said that....I'm sure a good Speedlight might be sufficient enough to suit your needs and won't hurt your wallet quite so much.

Would be nice to get some other opinions too?
