430 EX ii x2 or 580 EX x1?

Had a 350d for a while and had no clue how to use it, purchased a 600d a couple of months back and it has helped no end with its little pointers on screen to help me out. Can’t stop playing now and understand the basics, so want to up the game. Now I need to invest and play around with some lighting, I can get 2 x 430's for about the same price as its big brother. Would I be right in thinking 2 will give me more to play around with? Or am I just going to wish I had the extra power in a single flash? My photos are typically specialist cars (Typically very clean race/show cars both inside and outside) Also I travel so need to carry them with everything else.
Advice anyone?
 
How are you planning controlling 2 430EXs? You can use an ST-E2 which will allow you to use them both off camera or you can buy a 580ex which has the built in control module allowing you to grow your system as and when you need to or can afford to.

Good job I asked before I spent then. I thought I could use the wireless control on the 600d and have one flash activated and one firing as a slave?
 
As far as I'm aware the 600d has built in wireless flash control the same as the 7d so you could use two 430s off camera. Have a read of your user manual to confirm before you take the plunge though.

Also have a look at Nissin flashes. The Di622II and Di 866 are both wireless ETTL compatible and you'll get a lot more flash for your money. Even if you don't need the extra power, shooting at lower power on the more powerful unit means a quicker recharge time.
 
Having 2 flashes is going to give you much more flexibilty than one so unless you really need the extra power or another feature of the 580 I'd get the 2 430s
 
I would also get the 2x 430ex2 since you have an on-board commander flash to do wireless e-TTL with. And you can have both of them on the wireless automagic, the wireless system is one-way (camera talks to flash) and you can have an infinite number of flashguns slaved to the camera master.

As above.

You might have problems outside with the slaves not picking up the master signals reliably, so I would also get a couple of Yongnuo RF-602 radio triggers off Amazon for £50 which will cover you for those situations. They're full manual only, but that's not really a problem when setting up stuff like that, many would switch to manual anyway.

If you want full E-TTL radio remote control, then that's going to cost a few hundred quid, and it's only the Pocket Wizards that have (potential) RF interference problems though apparently only the US frequency versions of those.
