430 ex II or 580 ex II (difference)

There's a good side by side here ...consider the master capabilities if there's going to be more flashes in your setup in future.

Main differences are
580EXII has a higher guide number, in theory meaning you have a more powerfull flash.

The 580EX MKII can also be used as either a master/ slave.
Master - being able to remotely trigger other flashguns
Slave - being able to recieve triggers from master flashguns.

If you are looking to expand your collection as stated the better option would be the 580, so you can get a 430 at another point and having a full set-up

Or you could do it the other way, have the 430 first to use on-camera, then once you come to make a second purchase, buy a 580 so you are able to use your 430 off camera and wirelessly.

Hope that helps

It doesn't really make much odds which one you go for now. But as said above, if you want to add another unit later, and have auto exposure control via E-TTL, then one of the guns will then have to be a 580EXII master unit (or equivalent third part model).

Or you could do it with an ST-E2 controller unit and two 430 guns. That would give you more flexibility but cost a little more.

Much cheaper would be to forget E-TTL and go for some basic manual guns and fire everything via radio triggers. If budget is tight, I would do that - get a 430EXII for now, and later on add one or even two Yongnuo 460 guns and RF-602 triggers.
