Hi guys,
I know this question will have been asked before, but i cant find it, so here goes

Im in the process of updating my camera currently canon 400D, i am thinking seriously about the canon 40D, i know the canon D50 is on its way but theres a marked jump in the price.

What i would like to know is.

Is the 40D a good upgrade, bare in mind im not a proffesional, i dont go out every weekend on shoots, and my main photography will be landscape and general stuff.

Will my lenses fit the 40D, i have a sigma 105, canon 75-300 is currently

Assuming i know what im doing behind the lens ( oh i wish) would i see an improvment in the quality of the pictures.

I am also looking at the 17-85 IS usm lens to go with it too.

sorry for so many questions.

Got some money burning a giant hole in my pocket, and if the wife finds it then theres a holiday on the cards instead of the camera !!!
many thanks mike

Sorry you appear mixed up talking canon lenses, nikon bodies oh and the D50 came out 3 years ago.

Funny, I am just sitting here watching Zathura ... seems like this movie isn't the only one caught in a time warp!

I think you're mixing the D40 with the 40D! One is Nikon and the other is Canon :)

Yeah. I'm pretty sure every model he listed would be correct for Cannon if the D was after the number sequence.

I was confused for a moment then!

many thanks for the non constructive answers
i wish i was perfect, but im only human, i got the D in the wrong place, the D50 refers to the new Canon camera due out soon, which i assumed people would know about.

its nice to know that as beginners we can always rely on our piers to help out.

Well a D50 is a Nikon model (as is a D40) whereas the 40D and 50D are Canon models. If you ask about the D40 and D50 that's what you'll get answers about, ask about the 40D and 50D and the answers will relate to those cameras.

It's simple really..........

If you want Canon users to be able to advise I'd edit your first post and the subject heading so that it says "40D". At the minute I suspect you're getting visits from Nikon users which, whilst we're obviously far superior in every other way, isn't that useful in getting you an answer.

Yup was nothing personal, just thought you were confused by the Nikon model range

Mike,

Glad to see that you're back in circulation...I hope things are sorted now.

The 40D is a superior model to your 400D but I don't neccessarily think that you'll see a huge benefit for your style of shooting...the 400D will perform just fine.

Any holiday being sacrificed would undoubtably be more worthwhile if spent on lenses....almost anything is likely to put your 75-300 very much in the shade.

Have a think about prospective focal lengths and see what opinions folk have.

Bob

PS...I also skipped over this yesterday thinking it was a Nikon thread and then remembered that you were a Canon user.

Thanks for the replys guys, and thanks to canon bob, i was also thinking of the 28-300 IS L too

I would also say that for landscapes etc the 400D is still a damn good camera. I went from the 350D (the one before the 400) to a 40D and to be honest the quality difference when shooting a landscape is none existent. The speed, better noise handling, live view, bigger screen are what made me switch but none of them are overly useful for landscape work or general use really. I would probably spend the money on some very nice lenses, maybe a 17-40L which is my favourite landscape and general use lens now :)

Its all about the glass when you get to the 400d model, i think. Spend the money on some decent glass. L series!

Would agree that you would be better investing in glass on the 400D instead of the 40D, I have the 40D which I upgraded from the 350D, for landscape the 400D is fine, the benefits of the 40D i.e, higher frame rate ect would not be much use for land scape.

I don't "do" landscapes, "animal stuff" is more my thing
But I went from a 400D to a 40D using ( on both) as a main lens the 70-200is f/2.8
I am glad I made the change,
that "new" digi-sensor thingy is pretty damned good for what I need it for

I'm also about to upgrade from my 400D to a 40D and my main drivers (even though landscape is my primary shoot atm) is the spot metering, flash sync cable input (very annoying 400D omission) higher frame rate, and the feel and layout of controls. Most of the above is for studio portrait use which I intend to do more of soon.

EDIT: I lie, my main driver is really the £500 Jessops vouchers work gave me recently :D

Like Cobra I recently went from a 400d to a 40d and like him, I'm mostly "animal stuff" , the faster shutter speed and better autofocus do make my life easier, But I'd say if landscapes is what you do, then better spend money on glass and keep the 400d.

Tara

If landscapes are your thing, save for a used 5D - that full frame processor takes a hell of a picture.

I went from a 350D to a 40D, mainly because I wanted the larger screen on the back, and better electronics (the Digic III processor) as I often take shots in gloomy areas.

I love it, but with a grip & a decent bit of glass it's bloody heavy!

Steve

I went from a 400D to a 40D and I noticed quite a bit of difference in colour saturation and the screen is much better. For me it was one of my best purchases to date.

However i'd have to agree on the 5D front. I'm getting more and more into landscapes and studio work so i'll be getting a 5D too next year hopefully. I'll be keeping the 40D for weddings, animals and sports stuff though!

stick with your 400d mate, and buy more glass, see how you get on for a couple more years, then upgrade your body
hth

I reacently made the change too from a 400D to a 40D.

I compared them 1st on DP Review, and the technical specs are pretty much the same.

but i felt that the build quality of the 40D was better, more robust, easier to use & more comfortable to hold than the 400D.

I bought a 40D for just over £700, and sold my 400D to a mate for £300, so only a few 100 extra, but i dont regret it, i love the 40D.

Although if there's a 50D coming out your better to hang fire for the moment, also the 40D may drop in price when the 50D comes out.

I remember buying a Canon Powershot G7, for almost £300, and about 2-3 weeks after canon announced the G9 :bonk:
