Ok, I havent had my 400D that long, since October I think. Before the value drops too much, is it worth me selling it and getting the 40D? What would be the benefit?

do you need any of the features the 40D offers but the 400D doesn't? Have you got to the point saying the 400D is holding me back, or is the camera capable of much more than you can deliver yet?

I originally bought a 350D and then upgraded to a 30D 6 months later. My reasons were;

The 30D felt like a better built camera in my hand (personal preference)
Size (I liked the bigger size)
Spot metering

As I wasn't printing my pictures to anything much larger than A3 megapixel wasn't really a factor for me, but I have to say that I haven't looked back. Recently upgraded to a 40D and sold the 30D. Will keep the 350D for those trips where I don't want to take the 40D.

Remember, glass is probably more important than the body itself. have you thought of investing in that instead?

I'm still a relative novice with DSLRs, but I'd ask yourself whether you've grown out of the 400D? I wouldn't upgrade now just because of value. The 400D is a solid camera and even the 350D (now ~3 years old?) still has a reasonable resale value. Having said that, the 40D is by all accounts an excellent camera and I doubt you'll be disappointed if you do upgrade. Incidentally, I just bought a 40D from DigitalRev on eBay and I'd highly recommend them if you do upgrade

I started with a 350D and upgraded to a 30D, then to a 40D.

My reasons were:
350D - 30D
mainly financial, got a good deal on a 30D / 24-105 L combo and got a good deal selling my 350D & grip. However, liked the balance, spot metering and build quality. Really liked the 1/3 ISO stops - I do a lot of low light theatre photography, so this came in useful. I really got this for the 24-105IS, the deal was good enough that the 30D was effectively £ 100 after I'd sold the 350D and assumed the typical s/h market price of the 24-105L

30D - 40D
again financial reasons came into it.
superior AF capabilities (for motorsport)
superior low light focussing (for theatre)

I am not unhappy with the 400D. I love it. I am familiar with it, comfortable and dont want to change it. I feel part of it almost. But I wanted your thoughts on whether the 40D is worth changing to for the long run.

Thanks Andrewc, the ISO levels dont go as high I know that much!

SB...what are you taking pictures of..or want to take pictures of ?

Bob

Hi Bob,

weddings, sport and landscapes. Im trying to shoot wildlife too right now.

Normal ISO range for 30D and 40D is 100-1600 in 1/3 stops rather than full stops, so there are a lot more inbetweens than the 400D but the limits are the same. There is a custom function buried in the menus to expand the ISO range to 3200, but I've never been happy with the quality it produces at that level. Yet to try the 40D out at 3200.

Okay then....
My advice would be to sell your 70-300 and use the money from that and your proposed upgrade 400D to 40D money and invest in a 70-200/4 L and a 1.4 t/c.

The short end of the 70-200 is not at all bad for portraits (weddings...I assume that you're doing this casually), it will be fast enough for most outdoor sports and just fine for wildlife (with the t/c for smaller subjects).
Your 18-55 will cover the landscape stuff for a while yet.

I really think you'll see far more value for your money going down this route.

I like that suggestion and I am going to look into the costs. Should I go for a Canon, or will a sigma be ok?

I would stick with Canon. The 70-200 F4 as CanonBob mentioned can be bought for around £320 on the used market. Maybe less. It is a fantastic lens and very capable.

Your biggest investment should be in lenses, a 400D takes perfectly good pictures. You;; drop loads on the 400D if you sell it. I'd keep it a bit longer and then take a mega upgrade to whatever the 40D gets replaced by.

I am speaking as someone who has a 40D, I just prefered the feel of the bigger chunkier camera body.

someone is selling the canon 70-200mm F4L right now in the for sale section

used a 40d today for the first time. usually use a 30d for work but gave it a blast and was mega-surprised.

Great tonal range on standard setting and the 2mp resolution increase over the 30d is impressive, as is the noise reduction. The 3in screen is good too.

It still won't trump my Nikon D200 but it's a good upgrtade from one of the lesser Canons.
